Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, when you run into that kind of stubborn ignorance, it's best to just facepalm and leave. You can't kill them and you can't convince them, so all you do by staying in the argument is grant them legitimacy.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"But, overall, that was my point. These are the sort of people running the "conservative" movement. Their reaction to being questioned for their beliefs is to plug their ears and start reciting the story of John Galt getting progressively louder and screamy-er the more you try to talk to them.
Its acting like a 5 year old until you get your way or everyone who disagrees gives up and walks away.
Its why the moderate and independent voter faction keeps growing. because anyone conservative who questions their worldview is thrown out for being a RINO

It occurs to me the blatant bias that the cartoonist that came up with the animal mascots had. Republicans get Elephants, elephants never forget, largest terrestial mammal, intimidating tusks. Democrats get... Donkeys. There is nothing about donkeys that has ever been symbolically positive. Why did the Democrats take it as their symbol anyway?
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.Sh. It's all part of the plan to bring about the downfall of the poser Republicans.
A Jedi rhino with the words "The Force is With Us" underneath.
They saw Shrek?

It was an honorI think everyone should have to explain their worldview and then have to answer the question, "But what if you're wrong?" without just saying, "but I'm not" because that question forces introspection. I'm a Christian, but I got to the point where I am now by analyzing my beliefs and working through my problems with Christianity. I've met atheists on the other hand (this is not a crack against atheism, just those few individuals) who refused to consider the possibility that God might exist, in a "I never thought about it and I never will" kind of way.
That's kind of how I feel when I listen to these people. Doing that, ignoring the facts, causes people to essentially, "build their house on sand" where it will fall apart given a big enough shock while "building a house upon the rock" will allow you to hold your own, legitimately, not just by scaring people away.
as I recall, the donkey is at least in part joke on how Andrew Jackson, a democrat, was referred to as a jackass and adopted it as his symbol out of sheer spite for his opponents.
This,
I arrived at agnosticism/deism and liberal morals because I started out being raised in a fundamentalist church setting that basically ran on "because we/jesus said so" and given i was the kind of kid who9 read and looked up information on mythology, religion, politics, and other things for myself, I eventually came to the conclusion that everything the Seventh-Day Adventist church had taught me was bullshit based on a foundation of pure sand.

The elephant and donkey thing came from a series of political cartoons in Harper's Weekly. They just happened to catch on and eventually the parties embraced them because they couldn't kill them.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI knew Nast had something to do with it. Nast has his hands on 75% percent of American imagery.
Basically The Republicans called Andrew Jackson a Jackass and it ended up as an Insult Backfire to represent his determination and dedication. Nast used the symbol 30 years later to make fun of the Democrats again.
What I find funny is that everything else about those parties have changed except the name and the mascot animal.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.which makes it infinitely hilarious when Republicans of the modern day seem to assume Black people should vote for them because Lincoln, while seeming to not notice that in the interim years, they adopted the Solid South Dixiecrats who were once the hated foes of everything republican progressives stood for.
<searches for political T-shirts>
"Who would Jesus Deport?"
"Warning: Educated in public school system"
"If you can't convince them, confuse them"
"Everybody poops." With an image of the donkey and the elephant facing away from each other and poop between them.
"Mumble. Grumble. Complain. Wallow. Hope. Dispair. Worry. spaceVote."
"Dinosaurs against Creationism." (not really political, but it made me snicker)
"Elect Bland Compromise for office."
...there were others that I hadn't seen/thought of before, but I don't feel like repeating their comments here.

Kwame will be facing at least 15-20 years of prison.

Midgetsnowman: Yeah, I hate that. I've seen multiple people online that think blacks are stupid and have been tricked into voting against "The party of Lincoln."
To hell with the lot of you.
You homophobic, racist assholes should be ashamed.
