The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I remember Romney trying to distance himself from his Romneycare. It was quite ludicrous.

[up][up]I believe studies show a similar thing when it comes to certain gun control measures. It proves that people aren't necessarily more conservative, they just have a pathological hatred of Obama and anything he stands for even if it aligns with their own interests.

[up]That's because he viewed courting the extreme elements of his base as being more important than going for the moderates. Then again that strategy changed over time as he flip flopped like mad.

He tried to distance himself from himself. He ignored his entire record as governor cause that would have turned off the conservatives who vote in the primaries. He was a rather moderate governor, guess you can't be too conservative and get elected in Massachusetts.

Doesn't the entire Obamacare package and Romneycare package as well, find its roots in the 90s Healthcare plan Republicans proposed as the alternative to the Single Payer plans Mrs. Clinton was pushing for as First Lady?

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)

[up][up]Of course not, it's Mass.

Also he had to do that. Do you think he would have won the Republican Primary if he got branded as the guy that passed proto-Obamacare?

[up]Yes which makes opposition even stupider. The mandate they despise so much was supported by The Heritage Foundation for fuck's sake!

That reminds me of a joke.

You should look at his 1994 U.S. senatorial campaign.

I can't help but think that Romney might have done better if he'd played to the STATES' RIGHTS! CONFEDERACY 4EVA! fetish when he was challenged on Romneycare. It would have been the perfect way to simultaneously embody the Governor of Massachusetts and the Tea Party President, without either losing any votes he wasn't already going to lose or getting sent an Etch-a-Sketch in the mail.

He did. His response in the debates was pretty much "That worked for my state, but it might not be best for other states".

Yeah, but that was the debates, and Romney-of-the-debates was a completely different creature from the born-again Tea Partier. He should have owned up to Romneycare more when facing down the Tea Party.

Does anybody have anything on internships in the United States? I was looking at an article, but it was Canadian so I didn't know how true it was to the situation here.

Karzai is being Karzai. He likes doing this sort of thing when he feels he's not being listened to. He's like the Kim dynasty, only less batshit insane.

To be honest, what we need is enough presence to A: prevent the return of the Taliban, and B: intimidate Karzai into having fair elections. Neither of those goals is unworkable.

Does anybody have stats on which races get the most welfare? Someone I know is claiming it's Latinos but I've heard it's really white people.

pretty sure the vast majority of welfare recipients is the same angry white rednecks that hate lazy people, in fact.

In fact, the last censu put the numbers I believe around 68% of welfare recipients are white, 33% are black. Now of course, the right argues theres more white people than black people, and overall theres more black people percentagewise of the whole of black people on welfare than there are of white people, but that just kind of only works as a lame attempt to paint all black people as lazy (obvious but not going to be said derogatory term here),

Relevant.

White people claim the most by a country mile. Hispanics, of the three major groups, claim the least, with their claim being roughly in proportion to their share of the population (circa 15-17%). African-Americans claim less than whites overall, but claim the greatest amount in proportion to their share of the population, likely due to poverty and institutional racism. Interestingly, they don't stay on it very long - the "10 kids black welfare queen" myth is just that. Very few black welfare claimants stay on the program for more than two years.

[up][up]I know but I want actual stats. I find references to them on several blogs but nobody links to where they got the info from.

[up]Where does it say whites get more in there? I can't seem to locate it but I'm not reading too in depth. Is there a specific section?

There are a couple of pie charts about halfway through. They give the figures from 1997 and the projections for 2050.

Jesus fucking Christ dude move on! Obamacare is the law of the land. I think by this point people are tired of you whining about it. You might as well start calling it a good thing to score political points before the benefits start kicking in. Then you'll be seen as an enemy of that alongside social security and medicare.

I dont think paul Ryan cares about political pints because he's exactly like the people who elected him. Stubborn and convinced that he knows the right way forward for america and anyone who disagrees with him must be fought on principle.

What part of his state is he representing? I thought they voted for Obama.

Okay then but he must realize it's an exercise in futility that's just wasting tax payer dollars. It's the law and until he can change it he just has to deal with it.
