The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Right, Obama's cancelling them because he doesn't care about students. Honestly I think they're making too big of a deal out of this. It's annoying but there are far more important things that we should be worrying about.

Why are White House tours being cancelled, exactly? Was there some security breach recently or something?

It's because of the across the board spending cuts forced by the Sequester, I believe.

[up][up] Why would you close down a source of revenue because of spending cuts? Granted, I can't imagine ticket sales for tours of the White House add very much to the government's income, but it's gotta be better than nothing.

[up] Probably because the revenue generated by the cost of tickets isn't enough to offset the cost of added security and whatnot.

[up] All White House tours are free of charge, although you do have to set it up months in advance and they can be cancelled without notice. It is and always was an expenditure.

Is it on-topic to discuss apparent anti-gun hysteria/overreactions that are at least partially driven by the Sandy Hook tragedy and/or the new push for gun control legislation? Because some schools are taking it a bit too far.

It's completely idiotic but I am not surprised. Schools use zero-tolerance policies to strike fear into the hearts of children everywhere.

I'm not really sure how much the government can do to stop individual schools and teachers from making (poor) decisions like that except in broad strokes. But it's certainly demonstrative of a nation that is seemingly incapable of having a rational, dispassionate debate on how to treat firearms.

When you're talking at a national level, it's pretty much a given that you'll be able to find examples of schools fumbling the ball anyway, just due to the huge sample size.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

They're trying to shift funds from preventative care. What the hell.

That's what's confusing me. If their goal is to drum up support among the poor they're doing it in a very strange way.

Oh, no. it makes perfect sense

if you drum up support to treat problems like diabetes /after/ they happen instead of before, you not only look like you care about the poor, but you send tons of money to big pharma.

Its perfectly sane. Just amoral.

They're not trying to drum support among the poor. They're trying to get more money from insurance who don't want to give medical insurance to sick people.

I know it's a little thing, but I like how completely insane that exchange was. First there's this idea that it's the cuts to the White House tours, not, oh I don't know, fucking education that are going to hurt students, then Newt decides that Donald Trump ought to be the paragon of altruism who steps up to the plate to help, and then Trump responds with a total non-sequitur about Korea. It's just great.

There's commercials where I live now urging me to call my Congressmen and ask them to prevent the shut down of mail delivery and Saturday. Mostly by saying that they can pay for themselves and so on.

Also, I'm pretty sure Obamacare does things like care for people with pre-existing conditions, by making sure that the insurance companies can't turn you down for that reason. I'm not quite sure how the Republicans are expecting to sound revolutionary with this new plan of theirs.

They arent.

Theyre either trying to take credit for provisions already in the law with uninformed voters, or trying to funnel moar cash to big pharma and insurance companies

DrunkGirlfriend from Castle Geekhaven Since: Jan, 2011
#50897: Mar 9th 2013 at 1:14:06 PM

[up] My guess is that they want to keep that program open, without extending funding for it, then later point to how it's over budget and therefore Obamacare is bad.

Something that was recently linked in this thread said that McCain had a plan for a guarantee of health services to patients with pre-existing conditions as part of his healthcare platform during the '08 election. So even if Democrats have been pushing for this for a long time, the Republicans can trace a portion of the healthcare reform (namely, the bit about treating patients with pre-existing conditions) as their own from an era before Obama. If Democrats have had something like this in their agenda long before the '08 election, I'm sure that's all irrelevant to one of the two major parties in US politics.

Obamacare was based on Romney's healthcare proposals. That's what makes the opposition to it so ridiculous. It's literally just because it's Obama's. Studies have shown that if you show people all the individual mandates, they love them—until you attach Obama's name to it.
