Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And what about President traditional rights to appoint his own men ? Before Obama cabinet nominee don't get filibustered. voting against CIA director because of disagreement about drone attack/torture policy of president is a bit dishonest. It is not voting about drone/torture law, It is voting to confirm presidential appointee. Its not like nominee can change policy when ordered by president.
Voting to confirm a presidential employee who supports waterboarding, extraordinary renditions and extrajudicial killings, and the one who engineered the Disposition Matrix.
That's not dishonesty. Unless you think kowtowing to authority is dishonest.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Phillipe, A lot of stonewalling Brennan, and the torpedoing of Rice before him, was just a bunch of hypocrisy on the part of the Republican party. That doesn't mean that the candidates don't have to go through an approvement process. That's put in place in an effort to avoid presidents just handing out jobs to their friends. The spoils system, that's the phrase I was thinking of. Recent acts are annoying, but there is a reason for the process. And the filibuster in general needs more guidelines.
And now I remember the Morell guy. I think the consensus was that that interim directors typically don't end up getting the job even when they have a lot of experience. Which seems like an odd trend, to me.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Everything Boehner says just annoys me more. He can't even keep his own party from excess, and he's warning the Democrats against it? The ones who've shown moderation? Eesh.
And I have my doubts about whether or not that deadline actually means anything. What with just about every other deadline either being ignored completely or not actually turning out to be important.
I found a picture of Morell. Being a recluse, this is the only photo we've seen of him
◊.
@Oh So Into Cats: I am not going to sign a petition that's that silly. What's Obama going to do, issue a Presidential decree that orders Amazon to take DRM off their ebooks?
Asking people to sign petitions is forbidden.

Economy adds 236,000 jobs, unemployment falls to 7.7 percent
According to Forbes, the drop in unemployment is misleading.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported unemployment fell to 7.7% from 7.9%, but the drop was at least partially attributable to a decline in labor force participation, Baker says. The employment-to-population ratio (EPOP) was unchanged at 58.6 percent, exactly the same as the rate in February of 2012 and just 0.4 percentage points above the low hit in the summer of 2011. This compares with an EPOP of 63.0 percent in 2007, pre-crisis.

Was this Morell guy ever actually a contender for the position, though? Also, maybe Warren and Brown genuinely think that Brennan is a good candidate for the position. Which seems to be the opinions of a lot of the Democrats that voted for him. More cynically, maybe they just don't think this is one point they want to spend their energy fighting anyone on when they've got to focus their efforts on the banks issue.
