The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Or maybe he's finally admitting what he knew for a long time, but was hoping that the problem would go away if he just ignored it (or some similarly bad reasoning/logic).

He caused the problem! I'm sure he has some influence in the organization. He could have tried to get them to tone it down if he felt it would bite them in the ass.

Wow... who'd've thought you still crying wolf would have problems even while you're complaining that other people (and, not you) cried wolf a lot before over a chihuahua plushie you had to go buy to put there.

My heart truly bleeds. Diddums: you poor thing. (And, if I have to put any of that in sarcasm tags, something's wrong. [lol])

I still think it's silly for reading from the dictionary to be a viable tactic, but this way is a hell of a lot better than the last few years, when they just had to say "I plan to filibuster" and that was that.

From post 5776 : Ten numbers the rich would like to see fudged (interesting factoids, including "only three percent of the rich are entrepreneurs")

2. Only FOUR OUT OF 150 countries have more wealth inequality than us....the U.S. has greater wealth inequality than every measured country in the world except for Namibia, Zimbabwe, Denmark, and Switzerland.

Is the factoid really accurate ? is hard to imagine Denmark is as unequal as U.S. or Zimbabwe.

Ooh, Switzerland is really bad in this case, but it's warped by 20% of the population being immigrants who find it really hard to find jobs, but the government has to support them and another big chunk of the population being expats who aren't officially counted. The expats form a surprisingly large percent of the middle class, which in Switzerland is the equivalent of the upper middle class pretty much everywhere else.

Hitler was right wing, but the authoritarian type of right wing. That's why some anti-Statists don't see him as right wing.

If you define right-wingers as advocates of less government, and left-wingers as advocates of more government than by those standards Hitler was a 'left-winger'.

I still think the filibuster is a silly idea but you have to give some credit to Rand for debating something for thirteen hours.

Also, as to what he was filibustering for; how on earth does the president have the right to order assassinations of anyone ''suspected' of terrorism? That has to violate something in the constitution.

Well yeah but that's a stupid way of defining it. Two axes makes more sense than one. Hitler was authoritarian on social issues but center right when it comes to economics. He hated unions and communism so he's certainly not left wing in that respect.

I think at this point that comparing Hitler to anything is enough to get you to lose the argument, up to and including himself.

Minimum wage is 10.25 here. Course gas is much more expensive and a not-completely-shit apartment is 750 a month.

Only two Democrats and Bernie Sanders voted against Brennan.

That means Sherrod Brown and Elizabeth Warren - who was the Speaker for some reason - voted yes.

Also, the death squads and torture cells in Iraq? Petraeus helped coordinate it.

You have a habit of saying things and not explaining them, Serocco. How is Warren voting for him supposed to be noteworthy when most of the Democrats voted for him? I can understand Sanders voting against him, that guy's farther left than most others and is more understandable than the bullshit the Republicans were doing.

But yeah, a lot of your statements need more context than you give us.

Also, the Pretraus thing is not that surprising, considering the position he held then. *shrug* The entirety of Iraq seems to have largely been one screw up after another.

Sherrod Brown and Elizabeth Warren were brought in to help change the status quo with the banks. I didn't think it meant they don't care at all about the obvious war crimes committed by Brennan when it's Obama who wants him.

And before you ask, I preferred Michael Morell to a two-bit Homeland Security adviser like Brennan.
