The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

We have redistricting every 10 years. By then most people have forgotten how bad it was the last time and don't remember the problem untill it is all over.

BUT, there's nothing keeping you from adopting the proud tradition of americans to threaten to move to Canada at the drop of an hat!

Canada is America up north.

In the bad sense, I mean.

From the Canadian perspective, we do our best to avoid being like the Americans. We're mostly just tired of being conflated with the States.

[up][up] I don't get what that means either. We have problems, but they're mostly different problems.

Yeah, I don't know. Is Canada more similar to US or UK?

In terms of culture, the US. In terms of government structure and social programs, UK.

The culture is mostly because of the enormous influx of American media. 50% of media on Canadian TV has to be Canadian, but American companies can get around that by filming in Canada. The CRTC recognized Stargate as being Canadian after they moved to Vancouver. It doesn't help that the CBC goes about producing Canadian programming in the stupidest way possible. They have a habit of cancelling high-rated programs and pushing the low-rated ones.

It is wrong to ask the question "which culture is Canada like." Ultimately, the culture Canada is is "Canadian", which is an excellent one in its own right, and deserves more than to be dismissed as "like America, but a bit British." It isn't. I've been to Canada and America, and I come from the UK. The three countries are very different where it matters.

People who say "like America, but with maple syrup/Tim Hortons/Niagra Falls/Socialists/insert Canadian thing to taste" or "like Britain but a bit American and fat" (both of which I've heard) are talking out their arses.

I doubt there's a Canadian culture any more than there is an American culture. Our countries are just too big for that. Like, there's probably a Quebecan culture and an Ontarian culture, but not a Canadian culture.

* Quebecker. Quebecan isn't a word.

And there's probably a Montreal culture and a different culture outside of Montreal. Culture is a funny and illusive critter.

Quebecker would be a person from Quebec, but that's not what I was saying. I was saying the culture of Quebec, but words ending with "er" that derive from other words are nouns that refer to people, rather than adjectives that can be used more broadly.

Quebecker would be more like Spaniard, and I don't say "Spaniard culture". I say "Spanish culture".

Well then I can't find any dictionnary listing quebecan as an adjective.

It bugs me cause I know what you mean, but Quebecan sounds weird and I'm frankly not sure it's a word.

Eh, you can say that one part of the country is different from another, but that's pretty true of all countries. There's still an American culture and a Canadian culture. It's just that there's a spectrum within those cultures.

I understood the article better than the charts. But yeah, that information appears to be the same sort of information we've been receiving about the recession for a while now.

This is the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. So I'm not surprised or scared, merely depressed. A good link, though.

Well, the Great Depression isn't shown therein, and the Great Depression was the result of banking failures-aka a financial crisis. Ergo, it's a bit "off" to compare the Great Recession to post-WW 2 recessions because the cause is greater.

We're doing okay compared to the Great Depression after all-just as long as we don't get any Herbert Hoovers. Though, we do have fifty of them-

The thing about the Great Depression is everyone was losing money and everyone wanted out. The one we're in may not be as flagrantly bad, but the companies in charge are making record profits and buying legislation to perpetuate it.

Zendervai Since: Oct, 2009

This is a fundamentally unsustainable situation that the companies are trying to drag out as much as possible. In financial terms, the Great Depression was worse, but I think what this recession represents is horrifying.
