The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He wants to streamline the TSA so that it's focused on things that actually can take the plane down, like bombs. Right now there's too much effort on piddly things when you can build a short sword with the stuff in the gift shop. It's just not worth it. Too much theater, not enough actual security.

He ought to phrase it a bit more carefully then.

But yeah, TSA's become such a joke - and annoyance - for security theatre that it was long overdue.

Ouch.

In his final report to Congress, Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction Stuart Bowen's conclusion was all too clear: Since the invasion a decade ago this month, the U.S. has spent too much money in Iraq for too few results.
And Scott Walker keeps on rolling. It must be hard to be a Hindu in Wisconsin, given the governor's ability to make an utter joke of karma.

@Septimus, he used battle axes as an example of something that couldn't possibly take down a plane. He doesn't want any bladed weapons banned. They're just at the extreme end of things he wants unbanned. But that's the image that stuck with most people.

I mean I guess with a battle axe you could probably take down quite a few people until you were subdued but with all the gun violence that sort of risk seems to just be a fact of life. I do wonder why anyone would want to take a battle axe in their carry-on luggage, though.

Most Americans aren't missing out on much by the cancelling of White house tours. Most get the East Wing Tour, and the East Wing is nothing really special. It feels like walking through an art gallery for the most part, except it happens to be in the White House, so you can't go to the bathroom there, and you have to take public transport to get there since there's no parking near the White House itself.

However, if you can somehow manage it, the West Wing tour is pretty cool. And by manage it, you're pretty much in the category of "knowing the right people" or be in related positions of power.

I doubt the record will show any cases of an airplane hijacking using a battle axe or a sword.

Never heard of a plane being hijacked with a sword or a battleaxe. Only speargun (or was it a harpoon) and a smaller axe.

[up] There's not enough room in planes to effectively swing either, and if you're going to go the stabby route, you might as well just use a steak knife.

And the way they redesigned the planes, you couldn't pull off 9-11 with just a boxcutter any more. There's no point in banning them with the changes in the planes themselves.

Cockpit doors are now gun- and hitproof, for example. Also, pilots and passengers will now likely resist more in case of an attempted hijacking.

And pilots are trained never to open the cockpit door no matter what the threat is. The theory being: don't open it and some people may die; open it and everyone dies.

... You mean to tell me that prior to 9/11, nobody ever thought of making cockpit doors bulletproof/hitproof, despite the fact that airplane hijackings were not a new thing?

No, because they add weight to the plane (thus decreasing the range and/or increasing the fuel bill).

In their defense, prior to 9/11, Hijackings usually consisted of trying to take hostages for ransom, not using planes as mobile bombs.
