The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, they'd best find someone else to represent New London. The sexism (no female interns, ever!) is icing on the cake.

The Tea Party may not be more extreme but they are far less pragmatic and willing to compromise.

I'm curious why he doesn't want any female interns. Is it because he feels he can't control himself? In that case he would have a valid argument but that also means he probably shouldn't be in an elected office like that.

Even if that's above the age of consent in Connecticut(is it?)
16 for most, 18 under certain circumstances such as "Where one person's professional, legal, occupational or volunteer status gives him/her a role of supervision, power, or authority, over the other's participation in a program or activity, and the older person is at least 20-years-old." So yeah, under Connecticut law, I believe she would have been under the age of consent.

[up]I see. It sounds similar to PA.

That still doesn't make his comment appropriate in this situation.

[up]She'd be under the age of consent, so I'd argue that it would be even more inappropriate.

And so, beset by Political turmoil, the US gives up its role as the Global Superpower, betrayed by those that wished it to continue.

* Sigh *

So, what are the odds, if this goes on, of the US needing Foreign Aid in one or two Generations?

House Republicans are proposing this week to restore upwards of $7 billion to operations and maintenance accounts for the four military services hit hard by the automatic cuts that went into effect Friday night.

Our politicians would rather invade Canada then beg for foreign aide.

Speaking of age of consent, what is the reasoning behind letting states set their own local ages of consent instead of instituting a nationwide one via the federal government? Getting arrested for having sex with your boyfriend/girlfriend while visiting a neighbouring state with him/her just because there's difference between the two states' ages of consent and your boyfriend/girlfriend is still below the host state's legal age despite being legal under you two's home state's laws is ridiculous IMHO.

@Deviant: ... I have no words to describe this case of Too Dumb to Live.

The Tea Party may not be more extreme but they are far less pragmatic and willing to compromise.
That is what I meant to say. Thank you for clarifying.

Especially funny since a good deal of the greatest generation got far more "free stuff" (The GI Bill, anyone? ) than modern soldiers do.
