Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So the Republican's precious military is on the receiving end of this. The sequester is officially backfiring majorly on them.
EDIT: I just want to clarify the 'precious military' bit. I meant that the Republicans love it a little too much, not that it isn't important. A friend of mine said that people could read this badly.

Thank God that the GOP is going to directly feel the pain of this one.
As for Congressional salaries, cutting them is pointless. It's only a hardship for the ones who aren't already wealthy, which usually includes the more populist candidates. Cutting their paycheck only hurts the people we want to be in Congress.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"And more then that, the cuts have been done in the most Pig-Headed way possible — 9% from all programs, regardless of whether it can actually be cut?
If you going to cut, at least do it properly.

But the entire problem is that all of America has to sleep in that bed.
@ Congress' paychecks: Doesn't the 27th Amendment prevent Congress from touching it's own current paychecks? I was reading a couple of articles where it might've been a problem during the whole budget debates back in January.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."With regards to the Republicans and spending cuts to the military, this was an interesting comment from http://tinyurl.com/bt5tuzd
.
That the Tea Party is driving Republicans in office to no longer even care about their favorite darling the military, Military, they just want to slash and burn until there is no federal government, the military be damned.
:|a That could be a huge problem if true.
That article said that if nothing happens, the government will shut down this month. Is that true?

That sounds utterly horrifying. There's an extremely short step, if one at all, from doing that to flat out destroying the US. I know people have differing opinions on America, but no one really actually wants the States to collapse. That would utterly destroy the global economy. Including America's enemies and rivals.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016
Well it was his son who said he didn't want to be President.
Lobbyists’ fight against sequester cuts moving into a new phase
So essentially, this is going to be like the internet blackout over SOPA, except closer to Washington.
I expect Congress to have something together by the end of the month. Optimistically.
Worst case, at the beginning of the next Congress.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Senators McCain, Graham 'hell-bent' on getting Benghazi answers before Brennan vote
What pig-headed idiots. There already are answers. And furthermore, why exactly didn't you ask this the last half dozen times an embassy has been attacked?
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryBecause they couldn't use them to scapegoat Democrats to cover up an obstructive legislative agenda, of course!
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

... This is Bad for everyone in the US in particular and the world economy in general, with a Capital and boldfaced "B". The Tea Party needs a reality check, pronto.
