The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Let me just state how fucked up it is that the GOP is even getting away with this without major mainstream outrage. I mean, sure some people are angry, but no one's being driven to action by this. The United States stays ignorant and uncaring, and the cycle repeats.

This country is beyond saving.

Not quite beyond saving. It just needs a kick in the pants. There are a lot of sane people out there; the goal is to get their voices heard as something more than just liberal hippies.

So Snyder is going to be apointing an emergency financial manager for Detroit, because its well...to put it bluntly, fucked.

And of course the city council is throwing a big hissy fit over it.

If this was the galactic empire they'd be getting forced choke and being told You Have Failed Me one by one.

Sorry, but I had to snicker at the grammar fail in this sentence: "the state House of Representatives voted unanimously to honor veteran Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle after being shot to death by a fellow veteran at a shooting range last month."

Who was shot to death?

It would be somewhat darkly hilarious for the entire Texas legislature to be shot to death at a shooting range, though. Moving right along...

If the State House of Representatives were shot to death, we'd be honoring the...okay, no more of that.

EDIT: Ninja'd, I think.

Romney no one cares what you think. You're just a footnote in the history books now. Deal with it.

I'm going to be cautious in my optimism regarding the apparent budget increase in Texas education. If only because I've recently heard things on local news channels that don't sound so great. And also because of history teaching me that Perry will find a way to gut the education fund. I'm also still skeptical of charter schools.

GODDAMMIT. At this point I'm thinking that the pipeline is impossible to kill.

Also, we do have a thread related specifically to the pipeline, if we keep getting new and relevant news about it. Just so you know, Deviant.

I really can't tell if that's supposed to be a positive or negative in this context.

So, the result of spending cuts is letting illegal immigrants out of the prisons? I'll bet the Republicans aren't happy. Something they seem to want is resulting in something they really don't seem to want at all.

The GOP is basically counting on this sequester to wreck the economy and make the general public blame Obama/the Dems for it. This could easily backfire if they get the heat for their obstruction though. Wait until 2014 and then we can evaluate the success of this tactic.

Well, let's see if the Republicans bend over and fix the budget before the shutdown.

Though who expects government agencies to look for ways to ignore the "no prioritization" rule?

I expect the Republicans will go for the shutdown. The Tea Partiers strike me as very "Cutting their nose in spite of their face", ideology over the fact people are very likely to be pissed at them if it goes on too long.

Well, that seems to be what they've been doing anyway. And so far it doesn't seem to be hurting their chances at getting re-elected, an issue that's going to get worse if the section 5 of the Voting Rights Act actually gets repealed by the Supreme Court.

I just hope that the Democrats get ever more proactive in their message. The Republicans may not last for much longer if they keep up with this path, but they sure as hell can do quite a bit of damage before they die out. (Metaphorically, as a party, not literally.)

I'm left wondering if the US needs to suffer extremely from bad politics to understand why the Republicans and their No Compromise ideology is bad. I mean like Great Depression 2 and Government Shutdown for a few months bad.

Senator John Mc Cain criticized President Barack Obama on Friday for allowing cuts to the military with the sequester while “the centrifuges are spinning in Tehran.”
Blame your own party, Mc Cain. You're the ones who forced the Sequester in the first place, and convinced your constituents there would be an actual fence.
