Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Actually, in the Expanded Universe Jedi Mindmeld, or something very close to it, is a thing.
Not quite beyond saving. It just needs a kick in the pants. There are a lot of sane people out there; the goal is to get their voices heard as something more than just liberal hippies
.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"So Snyder is going to be apointing an emergency financial manager for Detroit, because its well...to put it bluntly, fucked.
And of course the city council is throwing a big hissy fit over it.
If this was the galactic empire they'd be getting forced choke and being told You Have Failed Me one by one.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Sorry, but I had to snicker at the grammar fail in this sentence: "the state House of Representatives voted unanimously to honor veteran Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle after being shot to death by a fellow veteran at a shooting range last month."
Who was shot to death?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It would be somewhat darkly hilarious for the entire Texas legislature to be shot to death at a shooting range, though. Moving right along...

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016I'm going to be cautious in my optimism regarding the apparent budget increase in Texas education. If only because I've recently heard things on local news channels that don't sound so great. And also because of history teaching me that Perry will find a way to gut the education fund. I'm also still skeptical of charter schools.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016GODDAMMIT. At this point I'm thinking that the pipeline is impossible to kill.
Also, we do have a thread related specifically to the pipeline, if we keep getting new and relevant news about it. Just so you know, Deviant.
And Maddow chimes in on the stupidity of Scalia's statements. You can always count on her to be straightforward about what she thinks.
The GOP is basically counting on this sequester to wreck the economy and make the general public blame Obama/the Dems for it. This could easily backfire if they get the heat for their obstruction though. Wait until 2014 and then we can evaluate the success of this tactic.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Well, that seems to be what they've been doing anyway. And so far it doesn't seem to be hurting their chances at getting re-elected, an issue that's going to get worse if the section 5 of the Voting Rights Act actually gets repealed by the Supreme Court.
I just hope that the Democrats get ever more proactive in their message. The Republicans may not last for much longer if they keep up with this path, but they sure as hell can do quite a bit of damage before they die out. (Metaphorically, as a party, not literally.)
