The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I have to agree with Fighteer here. It's up to the courts to figure out the severity of his crime. (i.e. Did it happen or is it heresay? Did he know she was underage when it happened? etc.) Do I think it shows good judgement in a representative? No. Do I think he should be in jail if he did it knowingly? Yes, if he hasn't served his punishment already.
Add to that the question of whether it's a case of the prostitutes being Older Than They Look; consider this one example from OlderThanTheyLook.Real Life:

  • There's an entire genre of international porn based on barely-legal girls who appear illegally underage. Obviously, this can get people into messy legal trouble. Columbian-born Lupe Fuentes gained international notoriety when her porn videos very nearly got a Puerto Rican man sentenced to 20 years for possessing child porn. What made the case notable was that it absolutely embarrassed the over-zealous prosecutor who, despite easily available proof online and on-file with the US Federal Government that Lupe Fuentes was indeed already of age, she stubbornly insisted that the actress couldn't possibly be older than 13-14, based on the sworn testimony of several expert witnesses who relied on the Tanner Scale. The defendant was overruled in the presentation of proof-of-age evidence and was only saved when Lupe Fuentes actually travelled from her then-residence in Columbia to personally appeared in court with documentation to prove that she was indeed already 19 years old when said videos were made.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.

I had a full-on rant about it written up, but I decided against posting it since it went into minutiae that I doubt most people care about. Suffice to say: calling the entire design a failure because they found a problem in one unit of a pre-operational aircraft is premature, to say the least. If it turns out to be a widespread problem, then that's more of an issue, but at the moment it annoys the hell out of me to see people screaming bloody murder about it.
If this were a new thing and they were out on time on a reasonable schedule, we could give the F-35 the benefit of the doubt. It's taken years longer than expected to develop them, it's still not ready, and it's contributing more to the national debt and deficit, I'll wager, than all welfare fraud in the history of the country. If we spent the money used for the F-35s on education, we'd be challenging the Scandinavians. If we spent that money on transportation, we'd be challenging the Japanese. It is a boondoggle not because of one little thing, but because of a dozen things.

Eh...probably not transportation just because we've got way more ground to cover than Japan. But education, sure.

A politician mentioning Lil Wayne and Tupac is really politics? Slow news day? XD

Anyway, from Politico as well: Kelly wins special election to replace Jackson Jr.

The money that Bloomberg is throwing around is not being mentioned by many? Heh, okay.

[up][up]Poor form, Progress KY. We actually want to oust McConnell. Spouting racist conspiracy theories, pissing off minorities, and generally being jackasses isn't a good way to energize the progressive vote.

I don't know if this is politics but you know how China is hacking all these companies?

Can the USA really do anything?

Can't China just go "What are you going to do about it? Attack us?"

Well, considering that USA is the country that hacks them the most...

I heard an NPR news story on that subject. They interviewed someone who was a US government electronic security specialist (or something like that). He/his team found a hole in a major US company's security and told them about it. Apparently, the hacking department had been looking for such a hole and was not happy that it had been closed. Now there are standing orders that any holes they find are to be reported to the hacking department and only told to the company after it has been cleared.

As for your question, some companies have started putting "booby-trapped" files in their systems. It is not the company's fault that you computer just reformatted itself because you opened an illegally obtained file.

Which is a fair point, but what people are saying isn't "yet another problem arises in the F-35 program", they're saying "engine blade cracked, whole program now worthless".

Yeah, it probably will. So far the only plans the Republicans are okay with are to blindly cut even more stuff than the sequester would. It's like trying to treat a cut on your finger by slicing it off with a hacksaw, then taking off the neighboring ones too just to be thorough.

The sequester will ignore the defense spending and focus more on social programs.

By the way, we already have armed guards arresting students at schools. Reasons include throwing a paper plane and not wearing a belt.

According to one of my coworkers just now, it's only a matter of time before Obamanation denies life-saving medication to gun owners For the Evulz. He's apparently also upset that there's talk of denying guns to people with a history of mental illness. Though personally I'm more concerned about the gun owners with mental illnesses that aren't getting treatment.

Well, of course. That's the basic premise: Thou Shalt Not Take Away The Right To Have A Gun For Any Reason Whatsoever Or No Reason At All. Any violation of that rule leads inexorably to tyranny.

And whenever a guy with a buttload of guns starts a massacre, thou shalt blame movies, video games and music. As well as homosexuals for some reason. And thou shalt suggest the best solution to all this gun violence is more guns.
