Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The problem I'm seeing here is I don't know if people actually care about TEACHERS losing their jobs anymore. I realize that's a bit cynical, but teachers don't have much in the way of good societal capital right now.
More optimistically, it's good to see signs of the administration putting facts out there where everyone can see them. They seriously need to do that more overall, in order to prevent people from voting ignorantly. Also I would like to see the Republican lie machine taken down by a steady influx of actual facts from news sources.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016@Radical: Can-kicking forever isn't inherently a bad thing. In this case, I think it'd be actually beneficial to keep the can running ahead of the boot, because the Republicans are the ones who'll keep taking the heat for it, which will help weaken Republicans in swing seats and bolster endangered Democrats (such as Begich from Alaska). Eventually, the pendulum will end up in Democratic hands.
As a Dominican I'm surprised hiring hookers and a few kickbacks is the worst they can dig up about him. But I won't be sad to see him go. Y'see, when we get pissed at Republicans picking up hookers, it's usually because they go around pushing sexually repressive policy, and when we get pissed at Republican cronyism, it's because it happens on the scale of, oh, Scott Walker.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this....How we're we not holding the Dems to the same standard of Reps? I mean, I'm honestly more upset about him invoking Dr. King than of what he had done, but I don't get upset when Republicans hire hookers, either. I just mostly laugh that people who often claim to be devout Christians who are trying to legislate that sort of belief are doing stuff they would call immoral and probably outlaw if they could.
I agree. I don't care if you hire hookers, have affairs, are gay, etc. I just care if you're a hypocrite on the subject. I'm holding democrats and republicans to the same standard. It's just not a standard that paints this guy as anything more than a meh.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016A person who commits a crime should be prosecuted for that crime, whether a member of Congress or not. As for the moral implications, it is almost always more fun when Republican congresspersons who argue for morality legislation are the ones caught with their dicks in the wrong cookie jar (to mix a metaphor). Pointing out hypocrisy does not make one a hypocrite.
However, it would be hypocritical if this guy committed an actual felony and Democrats refused to acknowledge the severity of the problem. If he was indeed having sex with underage prostitutes, then he needs to be in jail, not Congress.
If, on the other hand, he already served his time, it's up to the voters to make up their minds if they want to keep him as their representative.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I have to agree with Fighteer here. It's up to the courts to figure out the severity of his crime. (i.e. Did it happen or is it heresay? Did he know she was underage when it happened? etc.) Do I think it shows good judgement in a representative? No. Do I think he should be in jail if he did it knowingly? Yes, if he hasn't served his punishment already.
Honestly, I live in Illinois. We're used to politicians of every ilk winding up in jail.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickChihuahua's post fails to take into account things like, inflation, and rising costs on things we can't control and can't slash cutting into the money that normally goes around. There are detailed lists of what's being cut for this and how much it's being cut by. The article misses the point that the things that are automatically knocked off by things like this are the things that long term hurt those who can least afford it.
It doesn't show the rise in the cost of heathcare for a rapidly ageing population and the fact our infrastructure is falling apart but these cuts mean we can't cover that. It just looks at the budget from this year and compares it to last year. It's disingenuous to say the least.

I do. They insist on treating budget numbers as absolute, not relative, when discussing phenomena that are relative to GDP. By doing so, they prove themselves to be unrepentant hacks and ideologues.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"re: the F-35, I realize I'm a bit late to the conversation, but the issue with them is overblown and the article that was linked in regards to it is terrible.
I had a full-on rant about it written up, but I decided against posting it since it went into minutiae that I doubt most people care about. Suffice to say: calling the entire design a failure because they found a problem in one unit of a pre-operational aircraft is premature, to say the least. If it turns out to be a widespread problem, then that's more of an issue, but at the moment it annoys the hell out of me to see people screaming bloody murder about it.
