The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]Can the average person do that? That's another problem I have. The average young adult just isn't used to the kind of labor and training they're asking of them. They'd better provide damn good compensation if they're injured. They should also be getting paid but that would cost far too much money.

What hell?. All of these make me want to hit something but the inane argument against abortion is just unbelievable.

I love how republicans blame the sequester on Obama and completely ignore they passed the legislation causing it.

They have to blame it on him. They know it will cause bad things so they can't try and take credit. This was plan B all along.

Well, yeah. The thing was designed as a threat to make sure the supercommittee came to an agreement. Which anyone with half a brain knew it never would.

also I still find it hilarious how bad a photoshop that picture of Rove is.

How is that an unfair depiction? Don't these people see the kind of hate speech their side routinely spouts?

No, they don't. Surgical removal of one's sense of irony appears to be a requirement for Tea Party membership.

No. because its only hate speech is it isnt "true" (for a given cultural value of "true" )

When a redneck calls a mexican lazy, he isnt intending to be hateful. he really does believe all mexicans are inherently lazy do-nothings who nonetheless steal his job and refuse to learn english overnight.

(which is racist as shit..but once again..their filter on how the world work conveniently edits it out of their mind this way)

They just don't want their precious military-industrial complex cuts, because it impacts major GOP donors.

Then they have even less reason to whine.

Who voted for the sequester? They did.

Why was the sequester in place? To serve as a threat in case a compromise could not be reached.

Who absolutely refused to compromise? They did.

Ah, the good old F-35. As pretty a boondoggle as has ever been conceived in the Mad Science labs of the Pentagon.

@ Fighteer: Not the Pentagon, Lockheed Martin. And to add to it, not just the US is riding on the success of the project — so are Britain and several other European Nations, Canada, Australia, Japan and even Israel are due to purchase the machine.

And there's no real Plan B.

The entire military procurement system is to blame for the F-35, including the Pentagon, Lockheed, the politicians pushing for the project, etc.

Canada mostly pulled out of the plan. Most of Parliament really didn't like the plane.
