The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Senator Cruz (R-TX): Obama's 'lasting legacy' will be creating Republican leaders
Teddie declined to mention where exactly they would be leading Republicans.

Read a report about John Brennan.

Democratic Senators were committed to blocking the Brennan nomination until after the White House released classified memos on the targeted killing program. However, the White House is negotiating with Republicans to reveal more information about Benghazi, and they're keeping the memos classified in spite of that.

Rand Paul is not his father, and I say this in a bad way. All the old man's weaknesses, and he has failed to show any of his strengths, instead catering to the Tea Party's madness.

But Teddie is right,Obama has done that,...if we're going by 1980's Reaganite standards.

All our politicians that aren't Sanders,Boxer,Warren, and Rep. Barbara Lee pretty much qualify for this. Back in '08 in the one dim spot of hope Edwards had to become President and when Dean was still relevant there was a chance for actual liberals.

But that time is over pretty much.

If that's uranium waste I'm gonna have another reason to be pissed off at the fact that we haven't gone widespread with integrated fast reactors yet.

[up] Based on what I've read. There was some confusion as to whether it was legal or not, based on a 1961 law.

Congress has yet to act on Internet gambling, but at the end of 2011, the federal Department of Justice announced that it was revising its opinion of the Wire Act of 1961, which the department had argued banned all forms of Internet gambling. In its announcement, Justice said it considered that the Wire Act ban was limited to sports betting, thus making online poker potentially legal — as far as the federal government was concerned.

With that in mind, online gambling was back on the table, and Nevada jumped on it first.

I don't for the life of me understand what is wrong with the Voting Rights Act. Are Republicans so hell-bent on dismantling the American left that they have to try to shit on LBJ's legacy? Really? After all these years?

Oh, its only a matter of time. People all over the shop in politics and beyond try to claim revered figures for their own and not-so-revered figures for their own, like some kind of shitty Top Trumps game. As though whether or not George Washington or Tom Paine would vote Republican or Democratnote  has any relevance on whether or not Obamacare or Planned Parenthood is a good policy for the 21st Century.

[up]

I know what their argument is. I just don't understand why they need it, or why they want to disenfranchise African-Americans. Seriously, do they hate the Democrats so much they are willing to rig elections and turn the clock back to The '50s just to spite the ghost of LBJ?

I get really annoyed whenever someone uses the fact that Lincoln and MLK were Republicans to deflect racist charges. Yeah, because he party totally couldn't have changed in the past 50 or 150 years!

There's a similar argument made about Fred Phelps and Strom Thurmond being Democrats. This ignores that one jumped ship with the rest of the Dixiecrats and the other's party should be irrelevant if his views more closely align with Republicans.

edit: Ted Cruz has a list of Harvard peolle that are communist agents.

Everybody between 18 and 25 would need to serve in a military capacity if this bill passes. Surprisingly it was suggested by a Democrat.

[up]You know, I would not mind if everyone was required to do some "public service" early in their lives. Even though I have not, I can certainly see the benefits of it. It would make everyone more involved with the political process and help people "grow up" after high-school.

Just don't require that it has to be Military (though that can be the default option).

They didn't ditch it. While Selective Service is still mandatory under the law, though, there's literally no set up to actually enforce it. Unless people are looking for a government job (most require an updated selective service registration), there's little incentive to actually follow it.

Besides, the armed forces are having enough of a time trying to justify the numbers of active personnel they already have. (Gripes about that go in the Military thread).

In a perfect world, I'd be okay with mandatory military conscription. Most European countries do it, and it'd be a way to end-run a lot of the social safety net issues because everyone would technically be veterans.

However, I do see a lot of people trying to weasel their way out of it, and I don't think it'll ever be effective in America.

Most European countries gave it up after we stopped having to worry about the Ivans overrunning our borders and taking our women and our capitalism. The Nors, Finns (of course) and the Danes still have it, some of the Baltic states, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Turkey (which is getting rid of it soon).

Russia and Belorussia still have it, but they aren't really Europe anymore.

I agree that it would be great, but simply not feasible.

In terms of sheer numbers, there are something like 28 million people between the ages of 18-25, with an additional 4 million people reaching service age every year.

The military currently espouses about 3 million active and off-duty personnel.

What would you do with all those people? And is this a paying gig? Or are we doing a public service thing?
