Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This, pretty much.
No way in hell the guys with a;ll the money would ever allow money to go back towards the poor and the small business.
small businesses might one day become big businesses with a neat idea or two that could kill the large business. Same reason why oil companies tend to buy up patents for green tech and sit on it.

I backed the Iraq war because Saddam Hussein was a big scary dictator who gassed his people and I thought he needed to die. I was younger at the time and had read too much Tom Clancy. Even then, though, I didn't think that the administration was selling it honestly: (a) as a WMD hunt, (b) as a quick in-and-out, instill democracy and we're done, yay.
I knew damn well that we were doing it partly as a matter of regional "stability", partly to give Bush something to make him look good to voters, and partly over oil rights; and that it would be a quick and dirty ground war followed by a protracted insurgency.

Yu hav nat sein bod speeling unntil know. (cacke four undersandig tis)the cake is a lie!Yep, patents are another thing that kill small businesses. Start to get moderately successful and someone will sue you out of existence even if their claims won't hold up in court. The way these cases drag on, a small business can't handle the legal fees even if they don't actually have anything on you.

Dick@Iraq War: I opposed it purely because, A, the grounds Bush had been using for a casus belli were a transparent lie and there was absolutely no evidence for the WM Ds, and B, in 2003 I was still a dyed-in-the-wool libertarian (not really big-L, as I had no tolerance for either corporate welfare or social conservatives) and my idea of foreign policy was "not America's problem."

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Eh, I see nothing inherently bad about putting police officers in schools, save for the possibility of boring them to death. But it's a bit insulting to propose $30 million (that little, really?) for school cops so we can say we're doing something about shootings while at the same time rejecting aid to states to rehire the millions of teachers, police, and firefighters that have been laid off since 2008.

I don't know much about funding, but it seems to me all the cop needs to do is sit on guard in the school, doing his normal job. All it seems to be is reassignment, which needen't be inherently expensive. I stress this seems like a gut reaction, though.
This is also true, though I might assign a nobler motive than "we must be seen to be doing something" to the GOP in this case.

Schild und Schwert der ParteiIt's still a divided issue, even among experts. Some say there is no price that's too high, while others would prefer local districts to determine the necessity of having cops or guards in a school at all.
30 million might seem low, but the program already exists, it just hasn't any money for the last 8 years.
It's a start, like so many are fond of saying of other programs. The cost of federally funding putting cops in every school full time is an estimate of between 3.5 billion and 5 billion depending on you who you ask, which may be too much.

Glove and Boots is good for Blog!Sitting on guard during his normal job means that a cop isn't doing what they were doing before. As that job they were doing before still needs to be done, someone else needs to be hired to do it. As a result, you need to hire new cops to do the old cop's job. This means it costs money.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickIsn't it funny how the GOP is willing to spend federal money to hire people when it goes along with their ideological conceptions. I guess government can create jobs after all, as long as they are Conservative-Approved (tm).

Also look at where they are getting the money from, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which according to Wikipedia.
I think such a program sounds like a good idea, though I'd say it should be paid for differently.

Why not kill sales tax and raise income tax? Because that hurts the rich and there are politicians who would happily lie, cheat, steal, and oppress the innocent if it means that doesn't happen.
