The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] Oh come on. Whether or not they realize it, what they are saying is "You are all lazy for not being able to make yourselves rich like us! Now we're going to do our best to prevent any of the opportunities that allowed us to be come rich to be available to you. What? I pulled myself up by my bootstraps without any help from anyone else whatsoever. Everyone else should be able to do the same if they aren't lazy.

No, they aren't lazy. You were just phenomenally lucky.

Its a common human thing. You conveniently mentally edit out the con tributions of others because the idea that maybe luck was more important than your competence is something humans dont like admitting.

From a purely theoretical sense, the biggest problem is that there would be no need for our current 2-house Congress. The whole point of having 2 "houses" was to make sure that every state has some power in Congress (the Senate) while giving the states with more people a larger say in general (the House). Make them all the same size and there is no need for the differentiation.

Something about the map I find interesting is that Sioux Falls, Des Moines, and Kansas City are all in the same "state".

One thing I like about that plan is that I'd be paying in-state tuition... except that in a couple of months it won't matter anymore :P

[up][up][up]I'm fairly sure the idea is to group the counties of the states into electoral districts of equal population, not remake the states into those districts.

[up][up] Same for "Atlanta" (where I would be) and a few others.

Besides, there'd be a lot of problems if, say, a population boom happened in the State of Salt Lake, and they'd have to redivide the boundaries.

Also a lot of states have some sort of state identity.

I may hate the way my state is run, but I'm proud to be a Texan.

That's not a plus, especially if a large group of the citizens of the state in question take pride in a historical SNAFU. Exhibit A: South Carolina.

Yeah, I cant think of any goddamn reason to be proud of being a missourian.

I mean come on, we're such dumbshits our state motto is based off us somehow deciding an insult towards missourians made a goood motto.

I'm a South Carolinian (if only by adoption), and grateful to be so. Was there some irregularity in the state's founding that I don't know about?

Radical: Or an entire area, such as the south and the Civil War.

Also what did SC do?

I never really saw any reason to be proud of living in PA. We aren't terrible but we're not really special.

Wait, I may be historically miseducated. Wasn't South Carolina the first Confederate state to secede? Or was it North Carolina? I forget which Carolina set things off.

It was South Carolina. I'm proud to say that I live only a couple of blocks from the house where the Articles of Secession were signed. And Fort Sumter is visible from the end of the street.

I'm certain there are events and peoples in the history of South Carolina to take pride in, but triggering what would be the bloodiest conflict in the nation's history up to that point, particularly in the defense of That Peculiar Institution, isn't what I'd consider a point of glory.

That's more the stuff of another thread, but aside from That Peculiar (and lamentable) Institution to which you allude, we'll have to agree to disagree. Regardless, in practice many citizens' attachments to their state are less abstract, and more personal, than to the country as a whole. It'd be inadvisable to meddle with local affections and loyalties just to play electoral math—and make the twin houses of Congress redundant.

My only gripe with congress (in terms of structures as to how peeps are elected) is we now have a system where you can lose the popular vote, yet still maintain control over the house.

Isn't there some way that the common citizenry can force a change in the system if they believe that their representatives aren't doing their jobs, and simply voting them out isn't a solution (as is the case here)? A popular referundum, for example?

Don't know, don't care. It's a serious failing in American so-called Democracy. There needs to be some other way, apart from Elections, for the Public to have a voice at a National Level.
