The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@deathpigeon: I'm specifically speaking to you here, because I think that this argument should resonate with your own viewpoint; shouldn't a community of free individuals be allowed to determine, within reason, what is or is not acceptable public dress for that community?

By "within reason," I mean something like this: Given the necessities of liberalism in a democratic society, "burqas only" might not be mandatable outside of a private commune, but anything in the range from "anything goes" to "for basic health, and frankly common agreements of public decency, put some pants on" should probably be left to the people or their representatives to decide.

We live to serve tongue

It wasn't wrong. Jawohl is just very...formal. Overly correct. Honestly, the only place I know where its used contemporary is the Bundeswehr. *

Also, because of the military use its used a lot in WW 2 Movies tongue Movie Osmosis does the rest. (It works the other way around too...I was probably the only one in 10th grade who used the word "bloody" during english class...)

-Herman Cain: Awesome. I might actually watch Fox. For him, and only him.

House, Federal Pay: Well, fuck you too.

Cornel West: Unbunch thy panties. Do you not understand what a war is? I mean, yeah, Gitmo is kinda a war crime..but it wasn't Obama that started that, and now we're in a pit. Do you want to know what actual war crimes are? Go live in Syria or Africa for a while.

[up] To be fair, did you see the footage of the meteor falling in Russia?

I do imagine there will be a manual that looks a little like this if the US government is going to be involved. And two subcommittees that need to hold hearings on what the color of the cover should be. "We kept it blue."

[up] Not to mention another subcommittee to discuss whether or not keeping the cover blue is dangerously partisan.

[up][up] Also, I would argue that setting up a system to deflect apocalypse-causing asteroids is in everyone's best interest. Seriously, the one that passed us just now is large enough that it could easily wipe out most of a continent if it hit.

Immigration: That sucks.

Taxes: Finally.

And as for the asteroid, isn't that kinda NASA's job? How do you defend against an asteroid anyone? Would simply blowing it up so the pieces burn up in the atmosphere work?

[up]I've seen proposals that you could set off a bomb next to it, just to knock it off course. Or strap some jets to it for the same effect. Blowing it up is pretty unnecessary.

[up][up][up]The estimate I heard would be that it would be roughly a 2.5 megaton blast so a citybuster but not a continent sized threat. Still a good thing it didn't hit though. The one that did was about a twentieth the size and caused about a thousand injuries.
