Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

PETA are extremist lying hypocrites who believe animals are better dead than in human slavery. No one should listen to PETA. That doesn't mean you're not a liberal. Whackjobs are whackjobs no matter what their nominal affiliation.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. Dick@ Shima and Maxima
I wouldnt call it that maxima is totally 100% a liberal. So much as that the republican party and its ilk have long since ceased being conservative. They play party to greed and reactionaries exclusively. Facts and data no longer hold sway in their world, and their masters benefit from a populace that accepts insane platitudes so they can line their pockets by perverting well-meaning conservative and christian ideals to be used as weapons of hate.
In a perfect world,. conservatives would stop the worst excesses of us liberals, and us liberals would drag conservatives kicking and screaming to changes that need to be made. In reality, conservatives are now part of the "liberals" and their voices are drowned out by calls to "faith" and "true conservative values"
In a a sense, "true conservatives" and Evangelicals are just as much a force of terrorism and insane zeal as the imaginary "muslim menace" they see in their deluded worldview. They pervert everything they supposedly believe in to fit a warped narrative of hate.

These threads have caused me to see clearly what I suspected for years. A lot of these so-called Christians are an abomination and a disgrace to civilized society. The political Christians?? Some of them should be tried for crimes against humanity.
In Genesis, God clearly ordered Adam and Eve to care for and tend to the Earth. Not piss all over it like a bunch of drunken frat boys.
And certainly not to use it up and leave nothing for anyone else. The Bible has an extremely pessimistic view of greed.
Wait, so OTC is the beta version of the perfect version of Real Life??

It was an honor
The easiest way to piss off an evangelical/libertarian republican is to point out 2 things.
1: Jesus was very much in favor of socialistic mores towards your fellow man.
2: Ayn Rand HATED christianity. Hell/ here's a direct quote from her on religion.
The good, say the mystics of spirit, is God, a being whose only definition is that he is beyond man's power to conceive- a definition that invalidates man's consciousness and nullifies his concepts of existence...Man's mind, say the mystics of spirit, must be subordinated to the will of God... Man's standard of value, say the mystics of spirit, is the pleasure of God, whose standards are beyond man's power of comprehension and must be accepted on faith....The purpose of man's life...is to become an abject zombie who serves a purpose he does not know, for reasons he is not to question. [Ayn Rand, For the New Intellectual]

True. We really need a true conservative party. People who are willing to listen to what's really happening and what needs to be done, and then figure out how to do that without disrupting things too much. Not this crazy far right regressionism. Democrats lately have been having to play both liberal and conservative to balance out the bat shit.

Funny that I actually agree with Ayn Rand on something, at least in principle.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Don't you dare call Jesus a communist, you evil hippie! ![]()
Seriously, as much as the Republicans invoke the Bible, a lot of their views on religious freedom and financial justice would have the Apostle Paul puking in his grave.
Question, what the hell IS the hold-up on meaningful climate change policy??
2 Thessalonians Chapter 3. Of "A man who isn't willing to work shouldn't eat" fame.

It was an honor@Shima: That's Calvinism, a nasty little doctrine that snuck into Christian thought a while back.
@Starship: The holdup is almost entirely from moneyed industrialists who see environmental legislation as damaging to their profits. They have a massive Congressional lobby and a fully equipped propaganda wing in the form of Fox News.

Because I am. It's not just them, of course, but they are some of the biggest.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"So, how does that apply to people who work fifty hours a week at minimum wage and are still below the poverty line? How does that apply to people who have sent in thousands of job applications and still can't find a job? How does that apply to the people who aren't physically or mentally fit to hold a job through no fault of their own?
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI know Godwinning is not considering good form; but....isn't this exactly how the Nazis came to power? So much influence on the government that you become the government aided by a huge propoganda machine??
It doesn't. You want the awful truth that I had to come face to face with? It applies to the RICH. People who don't earn bread by any sweat of their brow or any application of creativity, but who simply sit on their fat asses and collect a dividend.
There's a reason Jesus said you're more likely to get a cow to somersault through the eye of a needle than to get a rich man into heaven.

It was an honorPretty much, and the German Government tried to shove Hitler into a worthless cabinet position, that he then used to do a ton of shit.
Also, as I keep saying, Maxima's a Rockefeller Republican. Which we frankly need more of in the Republican Party. :( Nixon, you just had to kill the credibility of that wing of your party by being a complete and total fruitcake, didn't you? ¬ ¬
On the other hand, Nixon gave birth to the Southern Strategy. Ugh...
Frankly, Starship Maxima, aside from a few minor quibbles, I would have no problem seeing people like you in Congress on the opposite side of the aisle from the Democrats. You are capable of learning and responsive to facts, two things that set you apart from a great many lawmakers today.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It would never happen, but I would love to see a set-up for a week where people earn money based on how hard they work. It would really mess up the paradigm for the rich.
Folding gracefully is a skill more people need. I mean that in the best possible way.

Backtracking to a previous topic... What are the possible ways to fix that whole thing with the Congressional district distribution that allows the GOP to maintain a stranglehold on the House?
That means a great deal coming from you Fighteer. But I had help getting to this point.
It was an honor![]()
How is it distributed? I know in Canada it's done by population so you have a bunch of really huge ridings across most of the country, but really tiny ones in the cities, especially Toronto.
Who thought that was a good idea? That just sounds absurdly easy to abuse.

In the U.S., the party in control of the individual state legislatures gets to set the voting districts. It's a technique known as gerrymandering, and is almost always used to favor the party in power.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Also hope Karl Rove and the Tea Party's plans to clash into each other go well for everyone but them.
Dude seriously. I had to have Shima and Fighteer explain this to me for five pages and I still couldn't get it. It's like some politician got high, watched a video on quantum theory, and decided it would be a good basis for forming voting districts.
About the same as me winning the lottery. In Brazil.

The Greens are awesome. Too bad they have no chance at national power in our current system. However, I agree with their platform almost entirely.
