The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

and what is wrong with Christian moral principles?

Jesus Christ said "Love your neighbor as yourself.". Given that the Religion was founded upon him, I'd say it doesn't get any higher in morals.

Please explain what goes more against that:

A. Homosexuality B. The discriminating behavior towards homosexuals.

Because no definition of "love" I know includes the shit some people who claim to be christians pull.

[up][up]Sure it does. In the sense evangelical christianity defines love as stockholm syndrome to a wrathful, hateful god and anyone who diverges from the party line works for satan

[up]

and why doesnt someone found a boy scouts that accepts gays?

lets see. One, because the media would demonize the shit out of it for accepting gays and not having the political clout to defend itself the Boy Scouts would.

Two, because the BSA has FAR more funding than any new grassroots group could ever get, and would likely be stamped out violently by simply not being able to attrract enough kids that arent interested in a second organization with less legitimacy

three, because tradition is a stupid reason to keep any policy if its the only reason.

...I'm getting the feeling your a troll.

Take it to the Gay Rights and America thread. I'm sure Morg, Starship, and the rest will be glad to talk to you.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13063290950A30760600&page=340#8497

You're literally just spouting talking points. You have no facts, no logic, no reason, no sanity, and no point. Come back when you get some.

No one is forcing the boy scouts to do anything. They're making a choice. You're making yourself look petulant, and stupid.

Maybe if you decide to look at our facts, and think, instead of getting more defensive and more angry when your per-concieved "opinions" are called into doubt, you'll learn something. As others have.

very well then

THIS POST IS MY OPINION

if anything both democrats and republicans have moved to the left democrats just more so than republicans.

I can say it's my opinion that the sky is green, or that snow is made of Mountain Dew, but both of those things are verifiably false. As the old saying goes, you are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts. Similarly, you can't get around the facts just by stating something to the contrary and calling it "opinion."

And yes, people have pored over years of Congressional voting records and found that over the past couple of decades or so, Republicans have moved very far to the right, while Democrats have moved only marginally to the left in the same time frame. If you have someone who's done similar work and found the opposite, by all means present it. But until then, false statements masquerading as "opinion" will not get you taken seriously here.

But there are some people who are suddenly skeptical when one claims to be ex-gay. They don't believe the ex-gay claim, they don't believe the ex-gay testimony nor their declaration that they are ex-gay.

Actually, this is because many people who have claimed to be "ex-gay" later recant that claim.

Uh-huh.

and none of those whatsoever fit the definition of calling it "love" to throw your gay son into a re-education camp to be tortured till they renounce being gay.

Not to mention that whole phrase sounds a helluva lot more like stockholm syndrome.

Also, remember that denying same sex marriage also goes against freedom of religion. We allow Hindu, Buddhists, and Atheists to marry. Obviously, we don't define marriage as a Christian thing. In addition, there are religions that allow gays to marry. Why are they denied the right to marry gays as their religion dictates? Why should one religion be allowed to oppress others?

The same issue is often the issue with supposed Christian values. It does seem like Christian values are often an excuse to oppress other religions.

Anyhow, anyone have any predictions on how the Debt Ceiling this is going to go? (I'm betting they're just going to put it off another few months. Which is kinda fine with me.)

[down] Not all that interesting. Standard fox-news stuff. Homophobic bible thumping, and using standard "Obama is Ebil" talking points.

Tl; dr, it was as far as I can tell a pretty normal debate with a conservative poster until they suddenly posted something quite offensive in voicing their antipathy toward homosexual sexual practices.

(Not sure if this post will be thumped)

Is there a good reason to just eliminate the Debt Ceiling? I mean, does it serve a purpose?

Yes, the debt ceiling serves no purpose other than to deny the government the ability to spend money that it legally obligated itself to spend. You know, via the federal budget.

It's a hangover of the gold standard: some people just cannot accept, mentally or emotionally, the basic principles of fiat currency.

Not really. It's basically just a threat. There's no purpose to a debt ceiling, because literally anything would be better than defaulting on our current debts. 'Twas why our currency got downgraded.

@3of4 That sounds great in principle... and then you realize that (a portion of) the legislative branch is insane.

...Why did the topic have to explode when a conservative-leaning person came. Saddening...

Anyway, I thought there was an accepted convention to avoid filibustering nominees. Why Defense, of all things? I thought that defense was one field where there's more bipartisan cooperation.

As Reid put it, it's yet another sign of organized GOP intransigence. What I find illustrative, though, is that 4 Republican Senators voted for cloture. That gives me a small amount of hope.

Regarding the conservative thing, it's another side-effect of their information bubble. When you ignore facts, you don't fare well in fact based arguments. All you have left is bluster, and bluster doesn't earn you points on a forum that prides itself on civil debate.

Yeah, it is a convention. So was not dicking around with disaster relief. The GOP has resorted to every single dirty trick in the book to render government non-functional so that their narrative becomes the truth.

.Why did the topic have to explode when a conservative-leaning person came.

There are plenty of conservative people in this thread, they just don't appear to be conservative because the US has a conservative party (Democrats) and a crazy right wing reactionist party (republics), so you guys keep mistaking crazy reactionists for conservatives and conservatives for liberals.
