The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I was arguing with somebody and then they started shouting about FEMA camps or something. What are they talking about?

[up] My guess would be the FEMA concentration camp conspiracy theory?

Why would a disaster relief agency need concentration camps?

[up] Because it's actually being manipulated by the evil government/ is a secret government agency that was created to set up these camps, so that all the Christians/Patriots/Gun Owners can be imprisoned when the government declares martial law. wild mass guess

Seriously, google "FEMA concentration camps".

Yeah, the whole FEMA thing means you are getting into Alex Jones levels of crazy. No hope at reasoning with those people.

Wait, we have an article on Alex Jones? That's Flame Bait incarnate. Suggest a scrub/lock, if not a full removal.

It's actually not that bad a page, Fighteer. It's much better than I thought it would be. Go take a look at it. It seems to be actually following wiki rules and seems void of flame wars. I'm surprise impressed. It's even entirely focused on his work.

I don't oppose reducing mail delivery to 5 days as a general matter, but it's definitely not something you should do during a recession.

Technically we aren't, but our recovery is currently anemic as all heck. However, if the Republicans continue to be loonies and insist on massive spending cuts to please the Bond Vigilante Gods of Darkness, we're going to go back into a recession.

So you'd rather be the one who shoots back at the LAPD and becomes the subject of a statewide manhunt, then gets cornered in a cabin in the middle of nowhere and burned to death? That doesn't strike me as a superior option, frankly.

To be fair, getting unilaterally shot by the LAPD for delivering newspapers doesn't strike me as a particularly superior option either. Doerner was way, way off the deep end, but people don't end up there for no reason, and pretty much everything about how the LAPD handled everything after the shooting is...really, really suspect.

[up] We're not really in a recession anymore so much as a hole.

Yeah I never understood the whole FEMA conspiracy theory thing. Apparently they had a bunch of plastic containers that looked like coffins. Having lots and lots of plastic containers for coffins seems far too nice for someone who's going to kill everyone in concentration camps. It's a huge waste. If you're going to be killing mass amounts of people, you do mass graves or burn the bodies, duh.

Unless you're killing them so you can sell their bodies to wealthy necrophiliacs.

But that's getting off-topic.

@Pykrete: Call it a game of probabilities. You are vastly more likely to be shot by the LAPD if you resist than if you comply. I am a pragmatist and, when it improves my chances of not being shot for no good purpose, a coward as well.

So, it seems two-thirds of the gun deaths in the US are suicides. Not paranoid gun-nuts, not NRA lunatics, not gang-bangers, not even corrupt LAPD narcs. But suicides.

If you eliminated those suicide deaths than the, the rate of gun deaths in the US would be better than do-no-wrong UK with it's "guns are of the devil" laws.

The funny thing is the article, and the comments, STILL want to make this about guns. The complete lack of understanding and resources to deal with depressed people, especially depressed teens should be the focus, but why do that when you can blame the NRA?

Anyone listen to the hourly, 5-min news broadcast from NPR? Sometimes it has... rather important/relevant-to-this-thread summaries.

Just heard that overall foreclosure rates are down in no small part to the laws in California (that increase standards before a house can be foreclosed on) decreasing the number foreclosed on by 62% between last January and this January. Now Florida is the leader with a rate over twice the national average.

Hagel becomes first filibustered defense nominee. The news story I heard had a recorded quote from a senator who said, approximately, "I will not let him pass until Obama answers all questions about the debacle that happened in Benghazi." My reaction: what questions are left to be answered?

"I will not let him pass until Obama answers all questions about the debacle that happened in Benghazi."

That's the trouble with statements like that? How can there be an answer without telling the person what the questions are? What are the Questions?

An African or European Swallow?

Seriously though, Hagel's basically qualified through and through. They're just not confirming him because he said he won't prostrate at the feet of the Israel/Jewish lobbies. :\ Bunch of bastards.

http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/14/the-kids-are-alright/ On a more pleasant note, this I found interesting: Despite the decline in traditional religion and marriage, which pundits are claiming should lead to a skyrocketing in moral decay and crime, there is a drop in Teen Pregnancies overall, and a drop of violent crime overall.
