The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm unsure if this is better or worse than Akin being on the science committee.

Akin is on the science committee, Bachmann on the intelligence committee. Irony, my friends.

Who exactly is Akin and why should he/she/it be shunned?

A guy that said a woman's body has a way of preventing pregnancy if it's a "legitimate rape."

Well at least now the Daily Show can bring back the "Republican lawmakers say offensive things about rape" segment.

Has no one in the Republican Party sent out a memo saying "Rape is bad, don't say anything then that. Repeat, the only thing to be said about rape is that it's bad".

No, people have been sending out the memo of "Rape is bad messaging. If you're about to say something about rape, don't. Doesn't mean you have to change your beliefs though <3"

pretty much. The GOP has made it pretty clear that they believe insane, offensive, hateful shit and have no intention of not believing it. In their worldview. Non-christians are evil. Lesbians are evil. Gays are evil. People who dont vote republican straight ticket want america to die. Guns are sacrosacnt and the First Amendment only exists to protect their right to tell us how much they hate us. They just also acknowledge the need to not say any of it if they want to be elected by the useless prole slaves they consider their voterbase.

God, I'm hateful today. I cant help it. How absolutely cynical and cruel the GOP is while considering themselves some form of hero against an immoral world makes me wonder if America shouldnt just burn.

[up][up][up][up] Is there any science to back up the idea that being under a lot of stress stops ovulation from happening?

[up][up] I'd have to look it up, but it does sound slightly reasonable. Stress means hormonal balance changes and so on. The menstrual cycle is hormonal...soo. Wouldn't STOP anything...but might mess up enough, in rare cases.

Describing it as a rape defense mechanism? Thats kind of like saying your airbag going off from a hard broken car door is a anti-stealing mechanism.

[up][up][up]There is a condition called 'hypothalamic amenorhoea', a disruption in the menstrual cycle brought on by something such as constant exercise. Apparently, they used to think it was due to epinephrine released by exercise disrupting hormones. Now they know it is actually due to lack of proper calorie intake, but I think the idea "adrenaline makes the baby stuff go stop" is still stuck in certain circles of thought.

In the long term extreme stress can cause missed or irregular periods as part of generally fucking up the body, yes. It's pretty far from a sluice gate to stop rape babies though.

Police chief's daughter and her finance. He's basically attacking anyone who is remotely connected to his firing. Any sympathy he might have had (if the firing was the result of corruption) ended when he started shooting people. The fact that people are holding him up as an "anti hero" in some circles is sickening.

While my position on specifically when any "sympathy stops" is somewhat different from yours, I agree.

He's not a hero, but jackoffs like him aren't created in a vacuum. Knowing the LAPD, he's never going to see trial, and the blue line will get thicker as he's made into a warning.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.
