Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

While I wouldn't mind learning how to shoot in case I ever found myself in a situation where I needed to use one, I don't think I'll ever own one, and I'm not interested in a gun ban either.
Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.Frankly, I think that the situation most likely to prompt large numbers of the populace to take up arms would be an attempt by gun owners to stage an armed revolution. In this case, the arms would be taken up in defense of the country from the gun nuts.
It's an interesting blind spot that these people seem to have. In opposing all gun restrictions and glorifying weapons, they create the very conditions under which their hobby is most likely to "come under fire" (pun intended).
As for me, I fired a pellet gun once when I was around 10 years old, but that's my only personal exposure to firearms. I would not be averse to learning; indeed I've often been curious about the subject. While I have no interest in totally banning guns, even if I thought it would be possible, I would support a repeal of the Second Amendment, given how much trouble it's caused with trying to sensibly regulate guns.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I actually enjoy sport shooting (particularly skeet) and took all firearms badges when I was a boyscout.
I've begun to question why instead of banning specific guns, we don't ban the concept of a carry license for public use. Way I see it, you should be allowed to own whatever guns you want, but carrying those weapons outside of your household or vehicle would result in confiscation and a fine.
"The marvel is not that the Bear posts well, but that the Bear posts at all."How would that work for people that go to the shooting range?
Also I'm beginning to think a handgun ban is a better idea than a rifle ban. They're easily concealable which probably accounts for why so many fatalities involve them compared to assault weapons and rifles. Someone walking into a building with a rifle is much easier to pick out than a person with a handgun that can fit inside a jacket.
I'd suggest that shooting ranges and hunting areas should rent guns to shooters.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I would too but I doubt a bill to make that mandatory would pass.
edit: The logic failure in this graphic angers me so much.

They do. As long as you're willing to pay for the premium.
I picked up armor piercing ammo today over the counter! Gonna go kill me some rhinos, off to the zoo.
Fight smart, not fair.I'm pretty sure they were suggesting they rent them out to EVERYONE, rather than someone being able to bring their guns from their house to the shooting range. Which seems just a tad silly, to me. I mean, I'm mostly in agreement with gun control measures that have been suggested, but some of them have just gone way into weirdo world.
By Jove, Oh, My Gods!!
2016 election (Presidential)
One Democrat and Four Republicans so far. As well as Two Others.
As far as experience with guns: I've shot pistols, rifles and shotguns at one point or another. Been to ranges a few times in my life and when I was young I was always fascinated with my grandfather's collection. I currently have two BB guns for when I get bored and want to shoot cans. I still support common sense regulation.
There is no reason to have an assault rifle; if you can't defend your home with a shotgun you can't defend it period. There is no reason to have a pistol; If you can't defend yourself without a gun you shouldn't be defending yourself. There is no reason to have more then a clip. If you can't hit something with the first clip you ain't hittin' it with the second.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Huntsman will drop out fairly early on for being too centrist for the primary voters liking, Rand Paul will fail just like his father, and Christie will get slammed for being a traitor. So far I'm predicting Santorum gets the nomination in which case...honestly whether or not he wins would depend on who he's up against. If it's Biden he might have a shot unless he says something incredibly stupid about rape or gay marriage that pisses off enough people.
By Jove, Oh, My Gods!!
@Kostya: There's also Johnson and Ventura!
Blue-and-Orange Morality! It's my new favorite trope! Also, it's my signature trope! It's also going to be my Catchphrase!

@Kostya:If only Christie, Huntsman, and Paul were running who would win?
Blue-and-Orange Morality! It's my new favorite trope! Also, it's my signature trope! It's also going to be my Catchphrase!...
Unless Rand Paul somehow reverses his father's spectacular failure I'd give it to Huntsman. I have a feeling the GOP will either lose the House in 2014 or come close and that will spook them enough to try and go for the most moderate of the three. He might actually win. Santorum could overrule that though since he's going to get a big boost from the Religious Right.

Common sense isn't a term that should be used in politics. Self defining terms in general should not be.

I'm not likely to ever want a gun. I'm also highly unlikely to support banning any of them.
