The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

New Mexico considering bills of Gay Marriage.

I'm a skeptic of my home state getting anything, we are after all America's Kitty Litter box, but this push really looks like it will stick one way or the other.

It won't matter if DOMA is repealed, will it? (And I'm giving it pretty good odds of being repealed.)

There has been a suicide bombing at the US embassy in Ankara, Turkey. A guard is reported to be dead and the bomber is suspected to be from DHKP-C, a Marxist Leninist terror group. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-21293598 http://edition.cnn.com/2013/02/01/world/europe/turkey-embassy-explosion/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Even in the event DOMA is repelled, unless SCOTUS directly says that "You can not deny homosexuals the right to marry. then all that happens is that States have no choice but too acknowledge same sex unions even when done in other states.

Each state will still have to pass gay marriage.

  • Sigh* As I've said before, it's blatantly unconstitutional (violates separation of church and state) to prevent groups like the Episcopalians from marrying people they like. I feel like a Little Rock is in need.

This is an article about the backfire effect, which is closely related to confirmation bias and willful skewing of truths in debates. It's a damn good read and I find it highly relevant for this thread. Achaemenid posted this in the Gun Thread a while back.

http://youarenotsosmart.com/2011/06/10/the-backfire-effect/

I think we're all guilty of having done this at some point either online or offline.

[down]Yeah, my bad. It was definitely someone in the Gun Thread, though.

I'm fairly sure I wasn't the one that posted that grin, but thanks for the reference anyhow cool

It is a very decent article though, and when I read it after it was posted I did rethink a lot of things.

Remember the contraception bill?

The White House changed it. Now, religious employers are exempt from providing contraception coverage insurance for employees.

[up] Er, no it says the same thing that it always has. Religious houses can have contraception covered by insurance rather than directly, but either way, it's still covered. It just tweaks who pays for it.

Scott Brown says he will not run for Senate in the special election to succeed John Kerry

Holy Plot Twist, Batman!

Without Brown the Republicans don't have a chance to win the Massachusetts Senate seat.

So the real fight will be in the Democratic Primary between Ed Markey and Stephen Lynch.

I think that says more about Perry's lack of popularity really. A more appealing Republican (re: someone who hasn't been screwing the Texans for the past few years) would probably win the state easily.

Perry or Rubio? Rubio's only been a one term Senator so far, and only got in due to a Split vote. Perry, probably because he hadn't pissed people off enough for re-election yet.

Perry's structured the Texas apparatus to make it so that, if Texan corporations want their subsidies, they have to contribute to Perry in some way. That's why he's still in office.

Regarding immigration and Texas' blue-shift, I think I can see it leading to a direct reversal of the polarity flip from the '60s, when Democrats shed their conservative wing and became the liberal party, and Republicans the conservative party.

Latinos are politically relatively conservative, except on that pesky immigration issue, but if Republicans are forced to back immigration to take the Latino vote, they'll also alienate the Angry White Male demographic. This sounds like the very definition of a coalition reshuffle.
