The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] I...approve, because I don't like Feinstien's bill.

However, I do want better enforcement and legislation. It's tough. We have to keep the issue in the public mind, keep the ball rolling, and at the same time prevent reactionary, knee-jerk legislation like Feinstiens.

[up][up] Considering they already sell Aspirin and condoms in vending machines, why not?

I find it hilarious that a staunch conservative like Graham has an effeminate name like Lindsey.

That used to be a guy's name, like Courtney. It's old English for 'Lincoln Island'.

Add to the fact they look like an old woman/butch lesbian (To be un-pc, and play on a old stereotype.)

Anyway, I'm sick to death of this Benghazi thing. Hasn't the circus gone on long enough? There are far more important issues facing us.

Ultra: Don't care which. The idea is weird to me. Although Japan did outlaw them some time ago from what I hear.

Deviant's Link: Then I suppose Bush's Secretary of State (who was it?) got away with murder around fifty times given all the time embassies were attacked. Did you whine then?

@Lindsey: I think most names that end in -ey used to be male. Lindsey, Kelsey, Courtney, etc. I could be wrong on that last one but I know the first two used to be male names.

[up][up]No, they're still trying to find Obama's Monica Lewinsky so until they do we will hear about this until he's out of office.

Wasn't Bush's secretary of state Condoleezza Rice?

Or was it Paul Wolfowitz?

EDIT: I think he had 2 (or 3).

Courtney used to be a male name. It's either derived from the French location called Courtenay or a Norse nickname meaning 'Short Nose'. Did any of the people who named their daughters these names actually look at what they mean? Wait, judging by the insane names that take a spin occasionally, never mind.

BTW, Kelsey means Cenel's Island.

The institutions failed because the politicians failed, and the politicians failed because we let them. The prison is still open because, fundamentally, and in the only way open to us, we as a nation expressed a desire that it stay open. Period.

Yeah, because when the only other option is the Republican party, civil libertarians obviously have an awesome alternative they can choose if they don't like Obama's policies.

Well if Civil Libertarians were committed enough they could have obtained a Dive Bomber and blasted Gitmo into rubble.

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) said that he would like to see the implementation of high-tech border solutions — including drone aircraft — as part of a comprehensive immigration reform deal.

Mc Cain:

"Drones!"

"God, I love Drones!"

"Dear President Obama-I'M SO ALONE! "

Has it really come to this?

I mean, I remember in the Vice President debates, how Biden said we should calm ourselves and be reassured we're doing everything we can, while Ryan was arguing for more aggressive action. The vice president said Iran's far from getting nukes just yet, and we're making progress.

If we're going to war by spring... that's not a good sign of progress.

Just because the Pentagon makes plans to do something doesn't necessarily mean they'll do it; they're supposed to have contingencies prepared for any forseeable scenario they might be asked to tackle.

True. The Pentagon has plans for an Alien Invasion; doesn't mean there's going to be one...

Also... Iran did just state that anybody who "attacks" Syria will trigger their involvement. tongue And, they've been making noise like that for well over a year. <_<

You'd be dumb not to pencil in contingencies. smile
