Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You still need a military structure to support and operate the drones. Where will they get bombs from? How will they magically evade radar?
"A very bleak picture." They said the same thing about every development in warfare back to the first time some ape got the idea to hit his friend with a rock instead of his bare fist.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Arrmed drones exist, they are dagerous, and it is quite posible that a terrorist group will get hold of/make one someday.
What has that got to do with anything importaint right now?

Yu hav nat sein bod speeling unntil know. (cacke four undersandig tis)the cake is a lie!Serocco and the recently OTC-banned Baff have a compulsive mad-on over drones, to the point where it's almost all they can talk about, and every political conversation has to be derailed to discuss how awful they are.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Ah. Ok.
~shrug~ They are still the safest way for our military to fight (from our people's lives stand point) and almost the most acurate (they target/hit exactly what we tell them to). That makes them significantly better than most weapons and is why we are using them. I don't see that changing in the near future for any reason.
Anyway, any new info/responces from Repubicans about the Debt or gun controll bills?

Nothing really new to say until Thursday
about gun control.
The Debt ceiling bit will likely come up again if Obama signs a short term raise to the ceiling.
Glove and Boots is good for Blog!I'm starting to wonder if a legislative death by a thousand cuts is how the Democrats plan to get their preferred legislation past the House for the next two years.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.@ Belian: I think just about every argument for the use of "Drones"* (of all sorts) has been thrown at Serocco — even including there's nothing new about the idea (some were used in The Vietnam War)* — and his views haven't changed one bit. It's almost a lost cause.
Keep Rolling OnI thought you hated all un-manned aircraft.
Anyway, Serocco, I'm going to temporarily de-rail the thread and give you two Attack Drones I've recently found from World War II:
They weren't that successful, but they existed. Do you like the idea of them? They're nothing new — if the technology had been there, they'd have been used much earlier...

Keep Rolling OnI find it odd that no one's mentioned yesterday's Inaugural Speech yet, especially considering the content of it. What with Obama specifically mentioned climate change as part of his platform/whatever, and also specifically mentioning gay rights. And other things that I can't remember, those are the two that stuck out to me.
An article on it (posted because this is what came up on my tumblr dash.)

The "nuclear option" just refers to using the opportunity the first few days of the term provides to pass the reform via simple majority rather than the standard plurality which can be interpreted as a contradiction of how the Senate is supposed to be governed.

"The marvel is not that the Bear posts well, but that the Bear posts at all."I thought he might. OR, at the very least, hoped. Filibuster reform has been a real need.
"The marvel is not that the Bear posts well, but that the Bear posts at all."

Hitler killed a bunch of people partly because nobody was willing to challenge him before then.
That's different from ignoring a warning, I know, but nevertheless - the fact that dozens of other countries have drones paints a very bleak window into the future of warfare.
