Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It is not dealt with yet. They just ended up focusing on tax laws and gave themselves another month to work with before the debt ceiling is hit. And thank goodness they did. There were some tax laws that had not been extended before then that would have been noticed by a LOT of people this month (and not in a good way). Trust me when I say you don't want to know the details. *shiver*
Anyway, we are going to hit it again at the end of the month if nothing changes. That is what you are hearing about: various Republicans taking softer stances on what the deal could entail. The current goal seems to be setting up a schedule where they can talk about various aspects of the budget over the next 3-4 months in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. (or something like that)

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Considering they have literally said the phrase "Compromise means coming over to the Republican side," yeah.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.Sounds like so much verbal filler, without a great deal to contest.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's nothing particularly unusual, every president has that sort of talk surrounding them. It's no more different than people for gun control saying that the NRA needs to be shot. Nothing special to see here.
Glove and Boots is good for Blog!Except that threatening the President is a federal crime that can get you some serious prison time.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"And Donte Jamar Sims was arrested for assassination threats on Twitter
So the tweets probably will get looked at.

It ain't over 'till the ring hits the lava.Yeah, there's a big difference between saying "someone should do something" and "I'm going to do something." Completely different things.
Saying that tweets like that will warrant some kind of investigation is wishful thinking at best.

Glove and Boots is good for Blog! Not all statements imply intent. I can say I don't like someone, and I can say that I would be happy to see them suffer (Schadenfreude and all that), but doesn't mean that I said that I was going to do something to do it to them, nor would I have motive to do so. Only by saying something like "I'mma do something illegal because <reason X>" or not even having a reason does it enter into being a possible threat.
Not every negative comment implies intent to do something. It's wishful thinking that people will take it all as Serious Business. There are certain things that can be said, and some things that shouldn't be said. That's the filter.
As much as some people want to limit and regulate certain rights, they have to remember that the ones that they express more often, like the first amendment are limited as well. It's why you can't yell "Fire!" in a crowded building. People will say and do stupid things, tweeting is just the next step in that.

Glove and Boots is good for Blog!1. Nigga? Fucking really?
2. Only 29%? Where do you get your facts from, Fox News? He had an approval rating in the high forties for most of the year and got voted in with 51% of the popular vote. While it could have dropped I doubt it dropped that much and even if that's the case he was elected fairly.

So with the debt ceiling raised for the moment, what's next? Immigration? I remember reading Immigration is a major focus for Obama's legacy-based legislation.
