Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Oklahoma Representative Markwayne Mullin Receives Death Threats
I'm not up on that sort of thing, how often do such people receive death threats?
Fight smart, not fair.Markwayne Mullin is a Republican congressman recently elected for the first time. I am not familiar with his legislative record so far. Has he done anything that would attract death threats?

All in all... eh, 3 out of 5.
I have a feeling Perry will try to run for the presidency again.
Let's say he does, in a primary field that includes Paul Ryan, Chris Christie, Marco Rubio, Mike Pence and Rick Sanorum. I think Ryan or Rubio would win in that scenario.
Unless, of course, Perry somehow Took a Level in Badass and becomes the nominee.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016@That article: "If you're talking to a single woman living in Anacostia who has the misfortune to live next to a crack house, to tell her she doesn't have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms, I think, is fundamentally wrong," he said.
One thing though. NOBODY IS SAYING THAT! Gun control=/=banning guns and you don't need a fucking assault weapon for self defense unless you're up against the mafia or something.
edit: Also his daughters probably have a lot more threats than every other child in the fucking world. Of course they're going to get protection.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Removing a right because you don't "need" it is not justified. Unless you agree with the ability to remove a right for non existent effects just to feel better. After all, you don't need a right to privacy if you've got nothing to hide.
You don't have a good reason to ban "assault weapons" to begin with. They're friggin' hobby rifles, they're just as good of home defense weapons as any other, and there's evidence that the ban will do no good, specifically the last time an Assault Weapons Ban was passed. It included a magazine size restriction as well, if you'll recall. If the ban is not going to make people safer, it should not go through. There's no evidence saying that the ban will have any effect on crime rates (including spree shooters), but there is some saying it won't.
Have a good reason, or stop pushing it.
Fight smart, not fair.Would you agree that even if we don't ban them they should be better regulated? Because that is all that has actually been done at this point.
We don't really need to completely ban them, just keep them out of the hands of "dangerous people" as much as we can. There are a number of ways to do that but the ones that Obama has settled on for now are incresed background checks before selling, better records of who purchases them, and some basic training for school employees.
To me, the real question is what the standards are going to be for determining if someone is not allowed to purcahse that sort of weapon.
