The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well I dont want to go down in flames with this particular topic.

I do beleive congress would become incredibly corrupt, in a negative way, if term limits were abolished.

But actually, if congress was a little bit more corrupt tha, it is at this moment... it would be kinda better in a way.

Nontheless the problem isnt term limits but campaing contributions. Limiting terms is the wrong cure for the wrong disease.

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) rips Chris Christie for NRA attack

“I think criticizing the Second Amendment movement and the over-the-top ‘give me my money’ stuff, ‘I want all 60 billion now or I’ll throw a tantrum,’ I don’t think that’s going to play well in the Republican primary,” Paul, the libertarian-leaning GOP senator, said of the Republican governor.

Ouch.

You know, if they keep this pattern up (get one thing done and kicking the rest down the road for a couple months), they might actually get something accomplished by the end of the year.

1: You shouldn't have to -challenge- your placement on the terrorist watch list; you shouldn't be penalized for being on it at all, because you can be put on it without a hearing if whoever's watching it has "reasonable suspicion" that you might be a terrorist (in other words, not enough evidence to arrest you). This is a violation of due process.

2: TR Os themselves are entirely unconstitutional; when a TRO is granted, the target's rights are temporarily restricted without a hearing (for example, they can be evicted from their own home). So adding to what can be done to that strengthens an existing violation of due process.

4: Administrative forfeiture does not require a conviction, and challenging it places the burden of proof on the person whose assets have been seized. Who in their right mind would want to allow even more of that?

So yeah, I think the NRA was right to go ACLU against these particular laws; the fact that they're only targeting symptoms of greater diseases doesn't make them wrong to attack them.

[up][up] Eric Holder's not exactly the sort of person whose opinion on that issue I would trust. No one is going to forget his role in Fast and Furious and how good an idea he thought that was, even if the President granted him Executive Privilege.

Here is a fun analogy from Cornel West.

Under the NDAA MLK could have been tried and executed with out due process because of his association with a know terrorist... Nelson Mandela.

Who remained in the State´s Department terrorist list for decade, until 2008 it seems, and received vast amounts of support from Cuba.

Dont know if MLK and Nelson Mandela had any direct association as Dr. West suggests but its an interesting tought nontheless. It also brings to mind Malcom X.

DR. CORNEL WEST - GOVERNMENT CAN BE OPPRESSIVE

Of course.. MLK ended up dead anyways.

[up]I hate to point this out, but technically speaking Nelson Mandela was a terrorist under the Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters trope. That is, he was the leader of the ANC's armed wing, he planned and carried out bombing and other acts of sabotage and he was making plans for a guerilla war against the South African government before his final arrest and imprisonment.

He felt himself that the ANC had ended up violating human rights; that was part of the reason he made sure the Truth and Reconciliation Commission wasn't prevented from investigating all sides in the conflict.

It ain't over 'till the ring hits the lava.

[up]

which shows why we shouldnt brutalise terrorist and not allow them to access due process. Because they are not beyond redemption and they can even help stabilize their own factions.

Not always but in certain circumstances, circumstances which due process and respect for human rights would allow us to take advantage of.

Also, I once heard that Tea Party was a terrorist attack against britain according to the FBI guideline.

Edit: [up][up][up]

Well bombing, guerilla tactics and sabotage are not terrorism per se acording to my personal definition. Becuase the legal definition mean anyone is a terrorist really, the largest one being the U.S government.

[up]

your comment reminds me of this:

If you are a resident of Texas, you will no longer find any mention of [Oscar] Romero’s work, beliefs, or activism in the Texas schools. It has been forbidden by the Texas Board of Education, per a vote they took on March 10. He used to be a featured part of a unit in the Texas curriculum about leaders who stood up to political oppression and social injustice. The TBE removed Romero from that unit because they said he wasn’t as important as Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, and others. One member commented that Romero “didn’t have his own movie like the others.”

[1]

But that articles has a mistake. It says "if you live in texas" which is not technically true since textbook makers usually adhere to the texas standards as to be able to be sold nationwide to maximun number of students. So this guidelines end up becoming national guidelines in a market sense.
