Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.Cross posting from elsewhere and regarding the constant refrain regarding the second amendment's purpose as a barrier against tyranny, but I wonder what data there might be regarding how men and women in uniform would react to obvious, excessive, and unlawful overreach of executive power? Because, while contemporary statistics might not be the greatest way to determine permanent policy, I think knowing where our military would actually stand should factor into how we best arm ourselves against them.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016A 2016 Christie nomination is only possible if, A, he manages to stake out a powerful position in New Hampshire and become the leader of the Moderate Republicans (tm), B, he doesn't face a splintering of the moderates due to another middle-of-the-road challenger (cf. Rubio), and C, the Tea Party becomes a fragmented circus like in 2012. Also, Christie may have to pick up an Etch-A-Sketch, and if he does that, he becomes Romney 2.0 and loses the election proper.
Now, if Christie can survive the primary without compromising his principles (because the Tea Party has spun even further into the Realm of Insanity), he has a good shot at the gold; the idea that there's one Republican who hasn't gone insane will endear him to the independent voters.
In that respect, he's kind of like Ron Paul; someone who could carry the election for the Republicans but probably won't survive the primary.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Huh... call me daft, but... isn't "well, I'm going to support the party line, even if it disenfranchises me and my whole demographic of millions, just because it's right for the country" just a little... I don't know... SODDING NUTS? <steams> Why flaming have a democracy, then?
Seriously: what's wrong with people?
(Well, the US has never really been a democracy. The US is better described as a democratically-elected constitutional republic. But that's getting technical or being pedantic... whichever.)
Glove and Boots is good for Blog!Dammit, Slate...when you're trying to bash the NRA, do not attack their actions when, in fact, they're in the right this time.
Three out of the four laws mentioned in the article are, in fact, in violation of the Fifth Amendment. (The gun checks act is something the NRA shouldn't be blocking, of course; knee-jerk stupidity at its finest.) The NRA is most certainly protecting the rights of alleged criminals to carry firearms, emphasis on "alleged." As much as I hate to say it, and as much as they're Accidentally Accurate at best..."Go, NRA!"

I'm not sure how you get that. The four laws in questions are: 1) blocking weapons sales to people on the terrorist watch list, 2) giving judges the authority to, when issuing temporary restraining orders, have the recipient's guns confiscated for the duration of the order, which can be no more than a week, 3) require background checks for all gun sales (which is presumably the one you're okay with), and 4) seize guns involved in drug offenses.
The most questionable one in my mind is blocking sales to people on the terrorist watch list, since I don't know what the process for getting added to that is, but people affected by the law could challenge their placement on the list, so I don't think that violates due process (assuming that's the part of the Fifth Amendment you're referring to). The restraining order one involves a court order by a judge, so due process is involved by default. The one about drug offenses is no different than police seizing anything else involved in any other crime, which they're already allowed to do, so I'm not sure what the concern is.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. For Christie to win the nomination, he'd have to get the backing of the big money donors that Romney catered to in 2012. Unless he manages to put on a very convincing performance at the straw polls, the GOP's wealthy sponsors will be looking elsewhere.
I too see nothing violating due process in any of those laws.
