The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well it looks like Fox News has fogiven Karl Rove. They've signed him up for a multiyear contract which lasts through the 2016 presidential elections.

Amazing, given his track record of losing elections that he puts money into.

[down] Point, but it convinces me even more that many in the conservative media think that 2012 was a fluke; they genuinely refuse to acknowledge the shifts in demographics that are going to hand Democrats elections for the foreseeable future.

In 2012. His 2008 record was great.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

Well, hand them national elections anyway.

True. Their House majority is, from what I read, maintained largely through gerrymandering.

Whose idea was it to let congress determine congress' voting districts anyway?

The individual states set their own voting districts. That's in the Constitution, IIRC. Too tired to look it up.

Oh right right. Nvm, carry on!

Dems really need to learn how to take back state governments.

Personally I wish to hear less complaints about state's rights abuse and more to putting the state government to good use. I mean, which is going to be easier to reform, state or federal legislature? There wouldn't be so much a problem if the state was more representative and respectful of its citizens than the nation. Then the arguments against federal overreach would make more sense and we can pay attention to that.

I swear to god, Christie is going to be the death of the Republicans at this rate.

I'm predicting a party switch by Christie in the next few years. The GOP is getting really pissed at him and I think he's starting to realize how toxic his party has become. If the Democrats win the election I think it's almost a certainty.

The Republican Party has survived George W. Bush, Sarah Palin, and Todd Akin.

I think they can manage.

It survived them but that doesn't mean it's healthy. The party is on the decline and while it might not be directly related to them (except for Bush) I think the mentality they embody is the reason for it.

I can't see Christie becoming Democrat, if that's what you mean by switch.

I can maybe see him getting out of the Republican Party if it keeps on as it has.

I could see him becoming one someday. He is the head of a relatively blue state. Even if he doesn't become one he could become the first Independent Governor.

Florida Governor Rick Scott is calling for expanded early voting days

Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) said Thursday that President Barack Obama doesn’t have the “political courage” to “admit” his true feelings about the Second Amendment.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out chris christie's extended interview with stewart. The man is smart. I disagree with him on some points but I don't think he's lost to the dark side just yet.

[up][up][up]Oh? I didn't know that.

Rubio it could just be that you're wrong about his true views. Did you ever think of that?

[up]I know. Christie is a moderate Republican. Unfortunately that will be his downfall unless he switches parties.

I have no complaints about that first one. If parents are required to buy it then they can't complain about their kids having the games.

Why on earth would Christie switch sides? It's the Republicans who'll put him into the presidency, if they can get their acts together.
