The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Wiki it. You will find more than you ever wanted to know about every president the US has had and it will likely be more accurate. If those pages are not watched/cared for, I don't know what would be.

Historical scholars generally put Washington, FDR and Lincoln at the top. The bottom rungs generally go to Pierce, Buchanan, Johnson and Harding. William Henry Harrison also, but since he died in 30 days, it's a tossup on whether he counts.

Other presidents near the top include Truman, Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt and Eisenhower.

I just realized that I have probably asked that same question about Teddy before ._.; Darn, kind of sad how life cycles around like that...

I would like improved public transit because I use it and it SUCKS! I would like it if a bus came more than every 40 minutes please and thank you.

Man, I wish the bus into the main metro area came every 40 minutes, right now it only comes four times a day. I think transit issues are the primary reason why I can't find a job. sad

And yet we "can't afford" to spend money on infrastructure, because "the country is broke." Le sigh...

Cycling was very popular where I lived. So much so that the buses had bike racks on them. However some places are just kind of far, and biking when it's negative twenty is kind of hard, you know?

@Baff: Yeah, that'd be a great idea, except that I live in the mountains, and the roads around here have steep grade warnings. tongue

Yeah, cycling is great, but it's not really a catch-all solution.

@Spooky: Teddy set up the National Parks and the Food & Drug Administration, fought against monopolies, and rode a moose once.

Best President, IMO.

What, why did we get into talking about presidents again? We have a thread for that.

My favorite president, policy-wise, is FDR, who, while he had very flawed policy, was the closest thing to socialism we've ever gotten, followed closely by LBJ. My favorite president, as a person, is Grover Cleveland.

Policy wise FDR is my top guy.

Who was that president that attacked an assassin? And then the Secret Service had to pull him off of the gunman? I like that.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

[up] That'd be Andrew Jackson, although the Secret Service hadn't been formed by then.

And Conspiracy Theories, in general. In fact, his entry in the Real Conspiracies sublist of UsefulNotes.Conspiracy Theories reveals how that obsession led him to even more abuse of presidential power/authority that what you seem to believe.

The usual screaming and hollering. Did you know, however, that it is illegal for the Centers for Disease Control to conduct research into gun violence?
