The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I didn't say it wasn't a good idea, I'm fairly sure that they're not going to repeal laws on guns on school grounds, the idea is that School Authorities will need to have a level head and training on emergency situations and have plans in place. And that it's -not- an endorsement for teachers and staff to start packing heat.

(Unless of course, they want to).

As far as the NRA campaign, a lot of people have been organizing pro-gun rallies and protests over the last two weeks (actually announcing they'd start marching on the 19th), so that should not be a surprise that Obama and staff have been rushing a response.

I'm still not sure about arming teachers but if they're made to go through the appropriate safety training then I suppose it's okay. Now, if this means it comes out of education funding then screw that. School shootings are tragedies but they're not common enough that we need to jeopardize the education of future generations. They can still be trained in self defense though so guns aren't absolutely necessary.

I do think gun drills are a good idea though.

@Baff: I know this was posted a while ago, but what narrative are you talking about that Jews in general aren't in favor of Obama? Never heard that one, thought the opposite, but pretty much all the Jews I know including my family are very, very liberal.

I'm Jewish and liberal (as are my parents), but at least in the circles we interact with, many but not all Jews are conservative (politically I mean- I happen to belong to the denomination called Conservative Judaism, which is something different), and the ones who are tend to be quite vocal about it. Overall, conservative Jewish groups do tend to be pretty vocal to the end that they can appear to be the majority- my parents actually assumed that most American Jews were conservatives until I showed them an article I found to the contrary.

Also, interested in hearing about those Executive Orders, will have to look into them.

[down] Yeah, basically that.

Bill to put tax on "violent" video games introduced in Missouri.

Here's a hint to the person who introduced it: ESRB ratings do not mean what you think they mean. Sigh...

The way that bill's being introduced is like emergency legislation. That doesn't make it more credible.

Why can't we just tax the fucking guns and ammo?

edit: Hold up. This is being based on specific ratings such as T and M rather than the reason behind those such as blood and gore? What? That's fucking stupid. The Sims is fucking T rated. THE SIMS!!!

edit 2: I know it's a 1% tax and in the grand scheme of things it's not that big a deal but it's the principle of this thing that bothers me. I'd rather we pass a 5% tax on guns and ammo since those are the things that are actually being used to murder people.

Given that an almost identical bill was proposed in Oklahoma by a Democrat a year ago (as the article says), I wouldn't say this is an exclusively Republican problem. tongue

Honestly I wouldn't blame them for not knowing that. I wouldn't if my former girlfriend hadn't been a big Sims fan. My problem with them is two fold.

1. They seem to think that any game that's T or M rated must be some violent shooter and couldn't possibly have other reasons for being rated that so they tie it to ratings, which can be incredibly arbitrary, rather than to specific content such as blood and gore, intense violence, etc. Whether or not a game contains this stuff is readily available information.

2. Games are primarily for entertainment whereas guns are primarily to kill things. In the hierarchy of what's to blame I think guns and ammo are worse than games.

[up]Don't care, still stupid. If they really want to do this then go all the way. Tax R and PG-13 movies and institute a rating system for books and tax those too. Why not songs as well? We might as well tax anything that could possibly incite people to violence.

Yeah, I don't see the reasoning behind regulating games while not regulating guns. Still, this debate's been ugly.

NRA shut the fuck up. Maybe if you people stopped trying to rile up the crazies into some nutty militia Obama's daughters wouldn't need that much fucking protection.

Does anyone else know what a "Zombie Title" house is?

It's what happens when a bank says they've foreclosed your house, but they keep it intact and force you to keep paying for a house that you don't live in.

[up][up]My problem is that they treat Obama as a hypocrite when anyone with half a brain could see why his daughters might need a bit more protection than the average kid. They're not guarded to keep nuts from shooting up the school they're guarded because some of these assholes might try and kidnap them to extort him.

Does anyone take seriously propaganda made against gun control by companies that sell guns?...

Anyway, the crap that keeps happening in USA politics wise is making me honestly consider avoiding the country for rest of my life -_-; I'd consider boycotting, but too much of entertainment comes from there and besides they aren't really related to politics or law system or anything tongue
