The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If it gets people to realize they're wackjobs and vote all these assholes out then fine. Stage as many revolutions or impeachment proceedings as you want. They'll all fail and the name Republican will be so toxic that we might finally be able to convince people to remove them from power.

If it works then fine, leave us alone. If it fails then maybe we can use it as an example for future generations. So I'm guessing this will be some ultra-libertarian, theocratic, utopia thingy? I give them 20 years.

edit: Also I can't wait for them to realize they need to start taxing people to pay for shit.

"The community will be known as Independence, USA. If and when it is completed, Independence will produce its own food and TV and film content. There will be homes, baseball fields and a theme park. Think: Small Town, USA, but with a Beckish vibe.

Beck announced his plans on "The Glenn Beck Program." The main entrance to the proposed community will be based on Ellis Island because, in Beck's words, that's how most Americans came to the country. There will also be a marketplace, but don't confuse it with your local mall.

"There's not going to be a Gap here. There's no Ann Taylor. You want an Ann Taylor, go someplace else," Beck said in a video announcement. The marketplace, Beck says, will be a place for people to create their own businesses and learn from others."

so yeah. a crazy libertarian werent the 1950's neato keen utopia attempt.

Hold up. Is he saying they're going to set up shop on Ellis Island? What? Does he think the US government will just give him that? Actually that's a good point. Where is he going to find an unclaimed patch of land to establish this thing? He seems to be implying this community will be entirely self sustaining which is pretty much impossible. Every nation has to trade with someone especially if it's as small as this one will probably be.

He's not talking about putting it on Ellis Island; he's talking about establishing an immigration system that is like early America's, rather than what he perceives us to have today. You know, starry-eyed white Europeans traveling on boats to New York Harbor.

I too wonder where he's going to find the land for it. If he tries it in the United States, good luck not paying taxes.

Didn't the old system make it easier for immigrants to get in? Yeah, good luck with that.

He could probably set up shop in a patch of the desert no one cares about but that makes it hard to make their own food. He also talks as though they'll just magically have the space for multiple baseball parks, factories, farms, etc. How big does he intend this colony to be? Finding land for a small town will be hard enough but what he's suggesting requires a space roughly equivalent to Rhode Island and there just isn't enough unclaimed territory on the map for that.

edit: He'd probably try and get out of paying taxes by getting the government to recognize it as a WASP equivalent to Native American reserves or something. It's a stupid justification but Beck's a stupid man.

i dont think its that difficult for Beck plan to succeed. it just basically theme park where visiting tourist could learn to grow food, hear lecture to establish business, seeing Beck studio, etc. economically it would be more Disney World than independent country.

Uh. Yeah, that's not at all what Beck is planning, because it's going to have to not be dependent entirely on tourism dollars.

the point of Going Galt is once you go galt, you cut yourself off from the rest of the world because without you, somehow the entire world will fall apart because only people leeching off others have nobody to leech off.

No gods or kings, Only Glen Beck.

Would you kindly pay taxes?

Which is one of the most stupid concepts I have ever happened to come across. Its like somebody had given somebody with a narcisitics personality a pen and had told them to write a bad novel abou... Oh wait...

Bio Shock, even do its just a video game, does a wonderful job of showing why going galt, even if possible, would end badly anyways.

I would still love to know where he intends to set up shop that he won't have to trade at all. Any area that would be able to provide them with all of their needs would be too large for them to just walk in and say they own it now.

Damn, someone beat me to the Bio Shock jokes.tongue Have fun Mr.Beck, his little isolated community means we don't have to hear from him anymore, right?

The "deprogram them" bit sounds too analogous to straight camps to me. That's got me incredibly concerned because that part of his plan he might be able to implement.

He's obviously never been to a college campus if he thinks crazy libertarian kids need deprogramming to ward off evil liberal thought. Theyre already impervious to any logic that doesnt involve worship of Ayn Rand or Austrian economics.

Its not real "Going Galt". its theme park where people can pretend they are "Going Galt".

look at the article : "teach people how to grow crops", "create movies, TV shows", "deprogram them every summer". It will need people to visit and spend their dollar. Beck even acknowledge his vision need to "one piece at a time".

the ironic thing is such a setup cant possibly work without a lot of moochers" to keep the thing running.

A Libertarian theme park? That in a way is even more cynical than "going Galt".

Edit: What the heck is so fascinating to the Libertarian mindset about the concept of founding a micro nation where everyone can go be like minded and have a free market utopia? My dad had that exact idea and was talking about writing a novel.

I guess it stems from the feel that society at large just consists of too many people who love to control and restrict stuff too much.

I'm reminded of the 90s and those weird isolationist groups like the Branch Davidians or the Montana Freemen (and their punny name, "Justus Township"). Is that the sort of thing that Beck is talking about?

I dunno, maybe they think that a free market world could really work? And like imagining things that way? I swear like half the science fiction I read has this happening, or has it as a background feature. And it tends to come off as really preachy.

The tar sands thing is still going on, btw.
