The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up], [up] Well it could if the Lords Spiritual decided to vote on something and happened to be the swing votes (they have seats in our second chamber). Likewise if the Queen ever vetoed something that would technically be the Church controlling legislation. However none of this happens, the Lords Spiritual only vote on certain things (though I can't remember what) and at 4% of the Lords they couldn't really do much anyway, and I don’t believe we’ve had a monarch use their privileges as Head of State for a long long time.

if the GOP only new thst muslims also beleive in the Judo-christian god.

Oh God... not giving yourself a given name (or at least not telling us, or maybe u did but we dont know who to beleive) and seeing us fight in your name thinking we are fighting against another god just because the word god isnt the same in english as in other languages.

@ Silasw

Those are confessional states. They are quite common in South America too.

And while I will always prefeer secularism, confessionalism is not a bad thing on itself as long as their is true freedom of religion and worship.

Not exactly. They believe in the same God but they think God has said different things. It's the same reason Jews and Muslims can't stand each other and Christians couldn't stand Jews for most of their history.

edit: Also to be pedantic God does have a name. It's Yahweh/Jehovah.

Yea, they disagree about what god said, but they beleive in the same god.

[up] But isnt that disputed? Isnt God´s name suppouse to be perfect and uniteligabel to us mere humans, in the sort of way that it would drive insane anyone who saw it or heard it? Or at least thats what I tought.

[up] Sort of...The actual thing is that Yahweh/Jehovah is another title, like El Shaddai or El Elyon. It's a corruption of the Tetragrammaton, and the vowels most likely are wrong.

[up][up]I understood it that God's name had the consonants YHWH in it and Yahweh was just the closest we could get to the right pronunciation.

edit: Debatable. I've known at least one person that said Allah is the Devil in disguise.

actually, I'd say the statement was perfectly correct given the average GOP christian doesnt believe any religion except christianity actually exists as anything more than people willingly spurning the only "real" god out of malicious choice or the devil's trickery.

[up]...I don't get what you're saying.

@Silsaw: I think a tendency with US culture is that it tends to nitpick things... there's a lot of complaints. It started out with some very clear-cut, uncompromising principles, such as being a republic. It's very different from UK culture, where things developed over time purely through faith in the elected legislature.

Ill be darned.

That dude is odd.

Also its fun how Supreme Jusitices, upon becoming justices, star to be treated less as jurists and more like forces of nature.

Also, intersting watch:

In laymans terms?

The idea that this is both a judeo christian nation and we're free to practice any religion in america is easy to reconcile when you realize a lot of fundamentalist christians assume these two thngs about non christians

they are either

1: fully aware Yahweh exists and only being atheist/other religions to maliciously spit in his face

2: unaware Yahweh is the only real god and Christianity/Judaism the only true faith because theyve been tricked by the devil.

I wonder if Obama's speech today will have any effect on the Republicans. Sounds like he's trying to shame them or something.

@Jan Brewer: Wut? She's actually trying to do something helpful?

I highly doubt 1 is the case.

You make 2 sound so bad but keep in mind, if what you believe is true, then there's something wrong with a different belief. It's just standing up for and defending your belief.

Brewer has been surprisingly non-dickish from time to time. I wonder if she got the message when her constituents and the courts resoundingly rejected her immigration policy.

@Trivialis: Quite frankly, I don't give a crap if my belief (or non-belief) offends someone else's. Freedom of religion means we live together in peace despite disagreeing on these things. If someone feels otherwise, they should move to a place where you can legally murder your neighbor for not believing what you do. Like Iran.

"Freedom of religion means we live together in peace despite disagreeing on these things."

When did I imply that this shouldn't be the case? However, I think Midget's comment is overextending things, which is why I replied so.

[up]I agree... kind of. I wouldn't say "infinite paths" like it was anything goes. But everyone has a right to beliefs, I do agree.

overextending? Maybe a little. I do know that is seriously what quite a few christians believe about atheists though. Mostly because the idea of a world where you cant see God's presence in every good coincidence is alien to them.

Goddamn I hate the Republicans in this state. Hey idiots, we can't impeach the president for pursuing stricter gun laws, and we can't declare federal laws to be illegal in this state. Nullification isn't something we can fucking do.

To be sort of fair, I've been eagerly anticipating the time when the Republicans will get around to filing articles of impeachment against Obama for whatever crazy thing they can dream up. The thing is that unless there is a chance of it passing and not making themselves look like laughingstocks, Boehner will never go for it. They would need a Senate majority, too, which is unlikely to happen even in 2014.

They are living in a dreamworld and the threat of impeachment, secession, or armed revolution is obviously ridiculous to everyone except them.
