The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]Yeah, and water is wet, the sea is salty, and all politicians are corrupt bastards. Nothing much new there, Braeburn. Which is a pity. It just shows that the woman in question has had her head in her arse for years, if she is just noticing now that COD Mo W is violent.

Oh look. a republican worrying about her grandchildren playing a game not rated for small children to play.

[up]It's like taking your kid to see Terminator and then bitching about the violence despite it clearly being R rated.

Oh for goodness sake - these people really do not understand "There is no evidence for a connection between fictional violence and real world one, so stop wasting time trying to prevent the former since it won't help the latter"

They don't even need to understand that. Just ask why Europe and Japan don't have this problem.

...You need a bill just to create a commission? Wow.

....How long before the NRA decries it as another attempt to "violate our fourth amendment rights"?

[up]

You need a bill to get anything done in the House these days.

...

Bills are kind of how the legislative branch opperates.

Note, however, that a commission is not the same thing as a committee.

[up][up][up]What is the difference? Committees just discuss, while commissions draft?

Committees are organized teams within a House or a Congress to lead the work on a bill.

I thought commission can be created by the executive branch to organize its own work, but I guess that doesn't apply.

Still wondering why in the world Obama would announce the platinum coin is off the table...

It looks like he's pretending to "cave" so he can make an excuse for cutting Social Security or medicare.

He's had a HORRIBLE track record as of late.

So I have been trough some conservative sites. Including Alex Jones.

Apparently the United States goverment knows the currency will collapse in 2013, oil prices will go up 3000% in a single day, and there are mass graves already in place all around the United States awaiting the enactment of marshall law.

so yea...

I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining.

I think the conservatives are finally warming up to Obama.

EDIT: As for the Trillion Dollar Platinum Coin, the main reason I think the White House scrapped the idea is that, at face-value, it sounds cartoonishly stupid. And because it sounds stupid, it could risk a possible panic in the financial markets.

The main thing I have learned about Obama in the past few months is that he is not a man who takes risks often. Compare him to Former President Clinton who said he would invoke the 14th Amendment to call the debt ceiling unconstitutional “without hesitation, and force the courts to stop me.”

And he is a terrible negotiator. He's the type of guy who folds often in poker even if he has a fairly good hand.

they do realize if oil prices go up that much in a single day thats less Obama and more "greedy oil companies theyve been coddling forever" right? >.>

Ha ha what? No,anything bad is by default Obama's fault in the conservative mindset. If you could even convince them the oil companies had to,they'd just say "Well Obama put them up to it" or "Well with these stupid green companies, there's no choice".

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)

The ironic thing is that if they really want the government to bring down oil prices the most efficient method would be nationalizing the oil industry. AKA, communism.
