The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Ahhh, I see.

Yeah, 200 dollars seems to be pretty standard. That's what my father received when he was first put into hospice and was waiting for disability.

Alabama Supreme Court: Unborn children protected by chemical endangerment statute

Isn't that a fifth amendment violation?

The right to remain silent doesn't apply anymore.

That is up for the Supreme Court to decide.

[up][up] I dunno about that either, considering that most abortions are done via pill and not physical procedures.

The fetus doesn't feel pain until the 29th week.

Therefore, until then, it shouldn't be considered "murder."

Pain is irrelevant anyway, because most abortions at that stage are performed under general anesthetic which affects the fetus as well as the mother.

Plus, until the fetus is out of the womb, it is not alive.

To argue otherwise is asinine.

Technically it is.

Life is a characteristic that distinguishes objects that have signaling and self-sustaining processes from those that do not, either because such functions have ceased (death), or else because they lack such functions and are classified as inanimate.

[up][up][up] Well that statement was not morbid and random in the slightest.

[up] I'm surprised its not more.

EDIT: This sums up my view on the Kennedy assassination:

"John F. Kennedy…[was] murdered in Dallas by some hapless geek named Oswald who worked for either Castro, the mob, Jimmy Hoffa, the CIA, his dominatrix landlady or the odious, degenerate FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover. The list is long and crazy — maybe Marilyn Monroe's first husband fired those shots from the grassy knoll. Who knows? A whole generation of American journalists is still embarrassed by their failure to answer that question. JFK's ghost will haunt the corridors of power in America for as long as the grass is green and the rivers run to the sea. Take my word for it, Bubba. I have heard his footsteps for 30 years and I still feel guilty about not being able to explain the biggest news story of my lifetime to my son." - Hunter S. Thompson

The spirit of the Fifth Amendment has already been thoroughly gutted to hell and back. I mean for one, there have been rulings that if the suspect doesn't remain completely silent to all questioning he's waived his right to not incriminate himself and further refusal to answer is contempt.

[up][up] It reminds me of what Jackie Kennedy Onasis said when they assasinated Robert F. Kennedy: "Oh my god! They are going to kill us all".

The US Supreme Court agreed to decide whether prosecutors can use an individual’s refusal to answer police questions as evidence of guilt at a subsequent trial if the silence came prior to being taken into police custody

Wait what? If they dont strike it down I am losing what little fait I have left on the Supreme Court.

[up] To be fair, under a previous judgement, silence before the reading of Miranda rights had been judged to be permissible as an admission of guilt.

Maybe hearing this might overturn that previous judgement. We'll have to wait and see.

I believe courts already do that sort of thing, via granting money for "distress" or something. Depending on if the prosecuting party can reasonably prove it. And certainly the shelter fucked up there and should recompense them somehow. Shit, I'd be pissed too after being promised my dog would be okay.

Not sure what this has to do with politics, though.

[up][up] ...That seems arbitrary... Why should only pets that are mammals count? What makes mammals so special? I mean, are you not equally distressed if your bird dies than if your cat dies?
