Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Technically it is.
Life is a characteristic that distinguishes objects that have signaling and self-sustaining processes from those that do not, either because such functions have ceased (death), or else because they lack such functions and are classified as inanimate.

It reminds me of what Jackie Kennedy Onasis said when they assasinated Robert F. Kennedy: "Oh my god! They are going to kill us all".
Wait what? If they dont strike it down I am losing what little fait I have left on the Supreme Court.

To be fair, under a previous judgement
, silence before the reading of Miranda rights had been judged to be permissible as an admission of guilt.
Maybe hearing this might overturn that previous judgement. We'll have to wait and see.

That comic implies that the CIA follows rules.
Supreme Court of Texas deciding whether pets have an emotional value in dollars
I believe courts already do that sort of thing, via granting money for "distress" or something. Depending on if the prosecuting party can reasonably prove it. And certainly the shelter fucked up there and should recompense them somehow. Shit, I'd be pissed too after being promised my dog would be okay.
Not sure what this has to do with politics, though.

Ahhh, I see.
Yeah, 200 dollars seems to be pretty standard. That's what my father received when he was first put into hospice and was waiting for disability.
