The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Jacob Lew, the guy Obama nominated for Secretary of the Treasury, has the single most unreadable name known to man.

Posted that, like, seven pages ago. (The signature in question, since Serocco's link doesn't seem to work.)

As for Wolf-Pac's progress, I said before that they got a Texas Democrat to introduce a bill that calls for a constitutional convention.

[up] Nah, mine's always been a squiggle. I never really learned how to write in cursive, so I always just scratched something out.

My brothers don't even bother with cursive. I've faked them more than once with a minimum of effort and they haven't realized the problem yet.

Actually, dropping out is an option for advancing certain visions, believe it or not. I recall one Republican talking head (can't remember who, sadly) suggesting that conservatives should go on welfare and stay on welfare until the welfare system collapses. The same strategy could be employed by liberals who want to see corporate power shrunk; if every poor American went on welfare at once, then Wal-Mart wouldn't be able to get any employees, so they'd have to raise wages if they want anyone to get off the dole and staff their markets.

So if Serocco, for example, wants direct action, there's that.

Welfare is means tested. You can't just "decide" to go on it, not without serious economic consequences to one's self and family. And even then, most of it is for families, rather than individuals.

Ramidel Since: Jan, 2001
#46863: Jan 11th 2013 at 7:09:02 PM

[up][up] That's the point. If the bottom layer of our economy refuses to participate in the economy, the Powers That Be are forced to either cut a deal or collapse.

[up] There are programs available for individuals to go on welfare that often pay about as much as a Mc Job, and also come with Medicaid benefits.

Families with children and savings would have a much harder time dropping out, you're right.

I don't think that's a good idea, because then the Republicans would have legitimacy added to their argument that welfare is for free loaders. Plus, people in general like the idea of being able to eat so good luck convincing people to do that.

As for the Wolf Pac thing: again, I'm skeptical of the chances for success. They're still doing a hell of a lot more than you are, Serocco. And note that the guy they convinced is a Democrat to begin with, so he already leans that way. So we are not totally devoid of politicians we can work with, we just have to do our research so we know who's for what. You shout a lot about ideology, but you don't say a lot in terms of what can practically be done by the average man right now.

Most of those programs require that you have a family or something don't they?

Ramidel Since: Jan, 2001

Not all of them; among others, Food Stamps and Social Security Disability are available to individuals, and SSD in particular has loopholes you can drive a truck through.

[up] Well played, young Jedi, well played.

I'd love to have a thread to discuss direct political action, or discuss direct political actions that are possible in the U.S. in this one. It's nice to remind people that there are options for political decision making besides "check the box next to the name you like every four years" and "overthrow the government by force". I'm a huge fan of consumer activism for starters.

EDIT: Myrlie Evers-Williams will be giving the inaugural invocation. Y'know, the black lady who fought for three decades to bring her husband's murderer to justice.

Oh, and my thoughts on Jack Lew's signature echo Charles Pierce's:

My biggest problem with the whole thing is not the way Jack Lew signs his name. It's that he's going to be Treasury Secretary and that he once put that signature on papers on behalf of Citigroup. I'd like to live at least one year in my life where Treasury isn't run by some guy who made a career in the "industry" that nearly blew up the world. I'd sign off on that.

Biden: NRA meeting was 'productive'

NRA: Assault weapons ban just a 'feel good' idea

I'm getting mixed messages.

Governor Chafee said Thursday that he would most likely veto a referendum bill that would allow voters to define marriage, should one emerge this year from the General Assembly.

White House: No to secession petitions

Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) Will Not Seek Reelection in 2014.

And thus the Rockefeller political dynasty comes to an end.

Look at how the media demonized Occupy Wall Street. They weren't able to accomplish much with the police, the politicians and the reporters all arraying against them.

Do you really expect the establishment to just bow their heads and heel if we yell at them loud enough?

I think Occupy Wall Street was doomed from the start. Partially due to the media, but also because the movement refused to get political. I really wish I didn't have to say this, but I think Occupy Wall Street could have been more successful if it had operated like the Tea Party did.

[up][up] That was a White House staffer, not Obama himself. Still, this White House has some catching up to do for hiring people with a sense of humour.

Makers of Violent Video Games Fight Legislation

Would the people pushing these bills kindly fuck themselves, and stop blaming scapegoats? Plenty of other countries have violent video games, as many of the US, and have far less shootings. You know what those countries don't have? Extremely lax gun laws. We know what the real problem is here. Stop shifting blame.

Seriously. There's no link between violent video games and actual violence. There is a link between scapegoating videogames and the real issues not getting fixed.

[up][up] Don't shift blame, Dr Tentacles.

Unfortunately, video games, as comic books and tv and movies and metal have been blamed for violence for years. It's easier to blame them than bad parents or bad children.
