Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

They should've made a bridge to Montreal then, we would've killed for a free bridge.
(I know Windsor and Montreal are far from each other. It's a joke because we are having trouble getting a new bridge done in Montreal)
Well, presumably there's a pay off in it for them, in the form of Canadian jobs building it from their side, and increasing commerce on both sides of the border. As well as the fact that the current bridge is old and it's just sensible to maintain or build new infrastructure instead of letting what's there crumble into uselessness.
The state of our infrastructure has been coming up more often lately.

You guys are having infrastructure problems too south of the border?
Funny you mention it, Montreal* is shoulder deep in constructions. In fact, I think it was last summer or the summer before, but we had a tunnel that partially collapsed.
It just goes to show that some renovations are more needed than others.

Easy. They want to increase commerce. This is not an altruistic move but one that benefits Canada.
By creating a bridge where you have to pay a lower toll (because its not own by a cartoonishly evil billionaire) then commerce gets a stimulus.
The bridge will pay itself over time.
Plus they are worried that the Ambassador bridge is too old and that if anything happened to it, or if it had to be closed for repairing then it would hurt their economy.

I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining.
Sure. There is also the concept or redundancy.
Its never a good thing to depend on ONE crucial piece of infrastructure. Alternatives should be built when the cost benefit analysis determines it.
This is an obvious case since it involves trade between 2 countries.

I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining.Therefor we can assume the plans for the bridge will go forth. Though it's probably that rich guy that owns the current bridge probably has other ideas to try and stop it or to gain control of the new bridge. Let's hope the citizens have learned that lesson and make the bridge stay public property. Or... since it's Canada paying for it it's Canadian property. I don't know.

Gonna need some clarification on how that one works.

This was happening before Bush. Obama is sadly just another data point in a larger trend. The executive branch seems to NEVER want to give up power it has obtained.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.I'm not a fan of that stuff, either. I think it violates the Fourth Amendment. However, I have to consider the larger picture, and when it comes down to it, there's nothing to recommend the Republicans in this matter. If my choice is between evil and evil, then I look elsewhere for distinguishing factors.

No, the prop is to block construction of the bridge.
