The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Kostya: Oh, you meant a trainwreck for the GOP, not the government as a whole. You should've clarified that!

The Republicans still have an institutional advantage in the house, and they're not quite as broken at the local level, but yeah-they're going to have to figure out WTF they're doing eventually.

No, sorry. I think the government will be in a bit of turmoil but overall I think we'll come out better than we went in unless the party that replaces the GOP is insane.

Someone remind me why the Obama-era Democrats lost their dominance over both houses of the Congress again.

A combination of Democrats not showing up to vote in the 2010 election, the GOP succeeding in whipping people into a frenzy by capitalizing on the Tea Party mania, and the economy not turning around fast enough while Obama tried to push through his healthcare reform.

I think the GOP missed a pattern in western culture. Over time, the culture gradually shifts to the left. Even the modern GOP would considered absurdly liberal by the standards of the original party. The problem is that the GOP hasn't shifted quickly enough, so they're being left behind.

What a silly, self-congratulatory idea.

The country's shifted economically to the right ever since Eisenhower.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

You'd be surprised how leftist this country was back in the 30's

I wouldn't crow demographic victory just yet. You fight demographic changes with gerrymandering in the U.S., and the Republicans made gains in gubernatorial elections last year. I think a lot of state legislatures turned red too. That's the level at which a lot of progress is being held up.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

A Fox News anchor has made the argument that "sweatshops are bad" is a "myth."

What is this I don't even.

Fox news generally relies on its base being made up primarily of idiots who never paid attention in a history class.

Well you could argue that they're necessary or even inevitable but I don't see how you could argue they're not bad. I think we in the west are all a bunch of hypocrites about slave labor though so whatever.

I was gonna give FOX the benefit a doubt on this. After all without sweatshops a lot of people in third world countries would be unemployed.

And then Greg Gutfeld said this:

"Sweatshops For Emerging Economies Are For Workers With No Skills"

Ughhh...

But the thing is that this is Greg Gutfel, and Redeye (the show Gutfel hosts) is meant to be a satirical, comedic talk show.

It is just that more than a few time Redeye has made a remark that slipped into Dude, Not Funny! territory.

BTW you may remember Redeye as the show Canadian Defense Minister Peter Mac Kay demanded an apology from after Gutfel made a ton of jabs at the Canadian Military.

Given Fox's tendency towards dishonesty in its entirety, I don't know why you'd ever give anyone on that channel the benefit of the doubt.

Obama criticized for lack of diversity in his Cabinet.

This is a little pet peeve of mine, but the people the president assigns to his cabinet should be judged solely on there skill and experience.

Race, Sex, and Sexual orientation should never factor into the decision.

Never mind the fact that he'd have a woman in his cabinet if the Republicans hadn't torpedoed Susan Rice's nomination. It wasn't like he wasn't trying to have diversity this time around. And hey, the Secretary of Veteran Affairs is Asian!

[up] I wouldn't say that, ultimately he could just keep picking members of the relevant demographic until Congress allowed one, but it's not something he could or should be blamed for.

It's kind of like blaming Congress for their lack of women.

We're aware of that, but there was such a push against her that she withdrew and he couldn't after that. She was a strong contender until then.

In a kind of legislative throat-clearing, lawmakers kicked off the new Congress last week by introducing dozens of oddball bills that have no chance of becoming law -- they are merely intended to get our attention

What's crazier reestablishing the Gold Standard or abolishing the IRS?
