The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Because the tea Party and its base absolutely control the primaries (because nobody else shows up to vote in primaries)
... What.

@Fighteer: So to get elected as a Republican, you have to be either a Tea Party-style extremist, or pretend to be one. Cripes. But that begs the question of why the hell don't they rouse the rest of the voter base to offset the extremist voters?

@That Guy There 47: This... is Bad. With a capital B. In more ways than one.

Apparently the US congress is liked less than brussel sprouts and lice, but more than Lindsay Lohan and gonorrhea. Does this sound about right?

the main why is because all the major media outlets for conservatives like Glenn Beck and Rush limbaugh and Fox News also want the extremists in power. So going against the grain is going against the very narrative the republican sided media has put out for the world.

lack of education + narrative that climbing out of your uneducated hole is socialism and eeevil makes it unlikely anything short of utter collapse of the republican party will stop them.

No seriously. part of their narrative is that higher education is a place where people are brainwashed into being libruls.

...and on the other subject, your spelling (or lack of it) attracts attention away from your point, Baff, especially for a Grammar Nazi with an Ambiguous Disorder...

But I want that to happen... Thats is to have people correct me (I wil correct any mistake that I notice I make of course and double check some words I am not sure about but many many words still get trough).

Also I hadnt tought about dyslexic people. From now onwards I will make an extra effort to double check everything before I send it.

But all is not lost! Congress is still more popular than North Korea, telemarketers, Fidel Castro, Lindsay Lohan, meth labs, ebola, and John Edwards.

I think Fidel Castro has higher approval rating than congress for sure. Also Lindsay Lohan, and John Edwards, and probably meth labs to though I am not that sure about that one.

[up][up]Didn't Santorum make some reference about educated people having no place in the GOP? Something tells me he didn't think that statement through.

@46606: Regarding your question about conservative radio talk shows, they predate the Tea Party. By a lot.

@Marq

its an entertaining trainwreck to wastch at least. especially when the saner heads reralized right after obama's re-election that treating everyong that wasnt white and paranoid as not worth their time is now their doom. and the party of course didnt listen and decided to be even more conservative as though conservativism only failed because they werent conservative enough.

The Republican Party is now in a four way split between:

  • The Republicans who think the best move for there party is to become more centrist. Think Christie and Bobby Jindal.

  • The Republicans who think the best move for there party is to pretend to be more centrist. Think Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan.

  • The Republicans who think the best move for there party is to become more Conservative. Think Rush Limbaugh and the Conservative Part of the Tea Party.

  • The Republicans who think the best move for there party is to become more Libertarian. Think Ron Paul and the Libertarian.

[up]Aren't those first two the same?

edit: I'd say the divide is between the Libertarians (Ron Paul), Religious Right (Santorum), and the plutocrats (Romney). Logically these three should be different groups but they've coalesced to battle the Democrats. Now it seems like they're coming apart.

What are the possible "Bad Ends" for this "trainwreck" course? I am not keen on having the global market go haywire due to the US economy imploding upon itself anytime soon.

well yeah. theyre tearing apart because all 3 are keen on believing they are the one true guiding light of the world that can lead it back from falling into evil and decadence if only everyone would follow them.

I agree with the first two but not the plutocrats. They just don't give a shit as long as they profit. The other two have members like that but they at least sincerely believe what they're selling will make society better even if they're misguided.

Well the Democrats will probably be a super majority for a decade or so while the Greens and Libertarians start pushing out the remaining GOP members. Overall I think it would be better for our nation since we won't have them holding us back and using things like the fiscal cliff and debt ceiling to blackmail the nation. The Blue Dogs could also join with the RIN Os to make the second major party while the Teapublicans fade away.

As it stands now Liberals/Democrats are actually in a good position due to a number of reasons:

1. The Electoral System. The 5 most populated states are California, Texas, New York, Florida, and Illinois. 3 of these States are Blue (Democrat), 1 is Purple (Swing State), and 1 is Red (Republican) but it is rapidly becoming a Purple State. Added to that is the fact that the once solid red states of Virginia, North Carolina, and Colorado have all recently turned into Purple States.

2. Latinos, Asians, and Blacks are making up an increasingly larger percent of the population.Latinos and Blacks are firmly sided the democrats. Asians as a whole tended to be divided on which party they support, but recently they are becoming increasingly more pro-Democrat.

3. Social Conservatism is becoming increasingly disliked. The Republican's positions on LGBT rights, immigration, and Marijuana legalization are starting to get unpopular. Though the issue of gun control seems to be an exception to this fact.

4. The Youth vote belongs to the Democrats.

5. The Baby Boomer generation is dying out. This may seem morbid, but senior voters make up a vital part of the GOP's voting base.

[up]4 and 5 are the reason they're in such a panic. It's finally dawning on them that the "You'll just become conservative once you're older" mentality isn't happening anymore. This leaves them with a base that's continuing to shrink. 2016 and 2020 could very well be their last shot at taking control and reversing this trend.
