Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Because he's actually pragmatic enough to say something along the lines of "We're giving too much support to one country."
That "one country" is Israel. The only real issue is how he said "Jewish lobby" instead of "Israeli lobby".

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.At least he can't be any worse than Rumsfeld or Cheney.
...... Admittedly that is some very faint praise.
And speaking of former Secretaries of Defense:
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Because he said he would put the interst of the United States above that of the "jewish" lobby.
A statement which I would support if he had said "Israeli lobby" instead of "jewish lobby" but I do beleive him when he says he misspoke.
I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining.Nah, just the ones in high places. We have a problem with rewarding sociopathy and failing to provide meaningful oversight and accountability in higher-end business and government operations.
But that is what makes American politics interesting (in a train-wreck sorta way).
‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ dischargees to receive full back pay from DOD
Bank of America to pay Fannie Mae $10 billion in mortgage settlement

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Talking about United States politics, and how cartoonish it is , here:
Prizw Winner Paul Krugman Obama Must Get Ready to Mint the Trillion Dollar Coin
If this doesnt remind you of the Simpsons, then it should.

Certainly went better than some people on this thread thought it would go.
I've read a dozen articles saying the White House has the upper hand, and another dozen saying the GOP has the better hand.
So basically, the media is divided and clueless. So nothing new.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016@ Jovian: I think the best things to be said about America are what it has managed to achieve in spite of the regressive aspects of our society. Take Braeburn's post
. Those are achievements - achievements far too long in the coming, but still impressive achievements given the resistance they faced.
America does have one of the highest living standards in the world and a very free press. It also used to have a claim of having one of the best civil liberties.
The foreign policy was always awful do.
Sadly enough, not only has foreign policy become more brazen about it's absolute disregard for International law and human rights, but civil rights in the United States are under assault and citizens are losing rights, instead of winning more rights.
So the overall image of the U.S can not be positive, and I think the public is wrong to adopt such an uncritical and self-congratulatory stance on what America does.
