The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Or when it conquers the northern part of your country or destroys the income of the lower classes trough NAFTA etc, or pumps your country full of weapons, etc.

Good. Fun fact: There are more people arrested in the United States than in the whole of China.

[up][up]But force labour isnt too diferent from the form of corporate explotation that happens in the United States. They just happen to be honest about it.

Its called Re-Education trough labour.

[up] Those are more like concentration camps.

Also, John Brennan is to be nominated for Director of the CIA.

He supports the drone strikes.

@Septimus: I was deliberately not counting North Korea for obvious reasons.

But force labour isnt too diferent from the form of corporate explotation that happens in the United States.
Examples please so I can get a better mental picture?

Crap. It would be nice to see Brennan kept from the position of CIA Director, but they're not gonna block his nomination.

[up] Criminalize marijuana. Disproportionately target black neighbourhoods and arrest teenagers for possession, after which they are tried as adults. With a criminal record, they never get hired and must turn to the endemic crime in those neighbourhoods to pay the bills. Then privatize the prison system so it can profit off of unpaid labour and be paid by the state for the privilege. The prison lobby suddenly creates a tremendous pressure via lobbying to arrest those kids again and sentence them to really long terms. Boom, the return of slavery on the down low.

Next up: Wal-Mart. On tomorrow's episode, the exploitation of illegal migrant workers in the agriculture industry.

No. Aldo you have to remember New Mexico was once Old Mexico.

All I am saying is that the United State stole from Mexico and was imperialistic and now it treats the migrants from said country as second calss citizens.

Thats all.

I must direct you to Ian Cromwell, who has said as much, and more, and better than I. I will not let my sources go uncited and Ian's the best source I've had for issues on race and social justice for a while.

(And to Starship, you may want to see a black man's approach to atheism too. It's spread out between his posts, but Ian's is an interesting story and one that might provide you with insight into us godless commies.)

Why was Nixon so obsessed with Jews?

Paranoia over the influence of the Israel-lobby in the United States, belief that Jews controlled much of the media, and belief that many Jews were Communist sympathizers.

Why the sudden interest?

In short, Nixon was a notorious Conspiracy Theorist, if only because he let his obssession with conspiracy theories considerably affect his actions as a president (mainly via such wonders as "The Plumbers", and other abuses of presidential powers/authority).

Man, I like how everyone has spent the last couple pages just shitting all over America. I mean, I'm a fan of constructive criticism as much as the next guy, but going by the recent sentiment in this thread, America is nothing but a cesspool of greedy, psychotic, gun-toting racist social darwinist ubercapitalists.

Stay something nice about America and/or Americans. Something sincerely nice, not backhanded. Go on, I know you can do it.

I think we get enough feel-good fluff from the politicians without adding to it ourselves in regular discourse, frankly.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.
