The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There was a corporation that funded drug cartels and Al-Qaeda. It's situated in America. All they got was a fine.

[up] There we go. I wonder why nobody talks that much about the vote.

Since slaves made up 40 to 50 percent of the South's population and were not allowed to vote, even when the decision to secede largely concerned their fate, I have no problem dismissing the decision to secede as not truly representing the will of the Southern people.

[up][up]Part of the general trend of not talking about the bad things in our history, which has been happening for decades. It's just not profitable to publish school textbooks that challenge the idea that we're virtuous and heroic as a country. You usually have to go outside the school curriculum to find out the interesting stuff when studying history.

It's a damned shame, too. Yeah, there's difficult things in history, and that's because difficult things happen. And if you take out those difficult things, kids actually find it harder to find the subject interesting or connect with what they're taught in any meaningful way.

[up][up][up]

you mean HSBC?

Because unde NDAA HSBC executives could be arrested by the military and flown to Afghanistan in CIA flights, and waterboarded, without access to a lawyer and detained indefinetely, if a federal judge considers that said executive was more likely than not (with out prove nontheless) to have aided Al Qaeda.

And this ruling, would, of course, be secret.

So there ya go. And as much as I enjoyed the mental image of having a banker be brutalized by our defense stablishment, I hope it never ever happens (but it will, not to bankers, but to people who arent provided immunity because they arent filthy rich and who might be innocent but lets throw away the key and torture them!) [up]

couldnt agree more.

I fail to see the problem.

The article details all the productive, positive things the US Military was doing to Haiti.

And the Drone was being used for a good cause. It was being used to determine the extent of the damage and usability the of Haiti's infrastructure.

EDIT: I just can not keep track of all these conversations.

Yeah, that was HSBC. They sent over $60 trillion to the drug cartels and Al-Qaeda.

Yea, fair enough.

But dont you think the words "compassionate invasion" are incredibly offensive considering America's story in Haiti? And could you blame people for being cynical about this whole military thing.

Also the U.S basically gets to determine which polititians gets to get permission to land in Port Au Prince and which doesnt, or at least they had that power until rescently because they had the ability to schedual flights.

They use this very same perrogative to try to avoid the president they had toppled (who by the way was an adherent of the theology of salvation) to return to his country after the earthquacke.

On 17 March 2011, Aristide departed for Haiti from his exile in South Africa. U.S. President Barack Obama had asked South African President Jacob Zuma to delay Aristide's departure to prevent him from returning to Haiti before a presidential run-off election scheduled for Sunday. Aristide's party was barred from participating in the elections, and the U.S. fears his return could be "destabilizing"

That's one of the reasons why I found history so boring and consistantly slept through it.

On another note, thanks for answering my question. It's been years since I've had a Texas history class and my memory is fuzzy on where exactly I found that information. I do remember reading Houston was disgusted with the vote in one of my books.

@TC; if you ever visit a book store there's usually lots of good books about history. And Lies My Teacher Told Me is a good book that reflects on the problems of how we teach the subject.

[up]That surprises you? Bachmann is for the same thing, and she's been squawking for months. Republicans politicians who happen to female are not voting for women's rights at all. This has been a thing for a while now.

The Republican leadership would be moronic (bordering on suicidal) to keep this crap over Planned Parenthood going. Its bad politics, anyone in favor of it is already voting Republican while plenty of swing voters consider it a deal breaker.

Republicans are more concerned with defeating each other in primaries than defeating Democrats in general elections. Even if it costs them some swing voters come election time, they might not even make it onto the ballot if they're the guy not attacking Planned Parenthood.

I can't recall if this has been mentioned yet.

As for the Hostess thing: Well, the CE Os are still people that exist that did something. They violated a contract. Shouldn't they still be liable for that even if the company is being dissolved?

With Hostess, remember that "Corporations are People". Literally, in the sense that, when they "die", any obligations or contracts made by the corporation become null and void; they don't confer to their officers, shareholders, or anyone else.

Dissolving Hostess is a perfectly legal way to get out of its pension obligations.
