The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Baff: I guess he agrees at least somewhat with Teddy Roosevelt's philosophy of "speak softly but carry a big stick."

Oy, is it just me or has everything gotten more confusing after this whole fiscal cliff thing has passed?

The problem with the Democrats blaming Boehner is that, unlike the incarnation that got elected in '94, the Tea Party (Contract With America 2.0) is functionally invulnerable to attack this time around; if they shut down the government and keep it shut down, their constituents will cheer even as military paychedcks stop flowing; they've drunk that much kool-aid. (Harry Browne, the Libertarian candidate for '96, suggested that doing just that would be exactly what the Libertarians wanted.)

In fairness the main reason Clinton was so successful in blaming the shut down on Gingrich, was that Gingrich would not stop talking.

Gingrich implying that part of the reason for the Government Shutdown was Clinton making him use an Air Force One plane's rear exit to deplane certainly didn't do the man any favor.

Well, see, the Tea Partiers aren't even a majority of the Republican party, not even as voters. Libertarians basically have to run as Republicans to get anywhere. There's a whole rest of the population, that if things get shut down, are going to be pissed off immeasurably. A shut down is something the Dems could damn well spin in their favor. I'm talking about moderate and independent voters, liberal and progressive voters, conservative voters who would find this not to be a moderate move but extreme, and generally otherwise sane people. The Tea Partiers may have influence still, but they've been losing it and no matter how bullet proof they think they are they're not in actuality.

Former New York City Mayoral Candidate Mark Green Equates Gun Owners With Child Molesters.

Ladies and Gentleman, only one week into the New Year and we may already have the stupidest statement of 2013.

....I wonder if I should show this too the guys at the Gun Thread.

Well, that statement isn't going to endear him to voters. Like cops, for example, who go out to arrest child molesters.

For fuck's sake JUST MINT THE GODDAMN COIN!

It's that simple! The only way Obama can lose is if he wants to!

I'm starting to get real tired of the cynics being right again and again!

@46305: Huh, that seems to me like a somewhat extreme position but I would hardly call it the dumbest thing anyone has said or is likely to say this year.

[up][up] Is this as scary?

It's not that idiotic seeing as again, cosmetic features are what Diane Feinstein's legislation is after. The "assault weapon" features are purely what a gun looks like, rather than its function.

What's scary is that I know a girl who'd probably buy that.

Huh? I think you misunderstand me. I'm just saying that as silly as that gun looks I know at least one girl who'd probably squee at the sight of it.

The notion that gun bans are based on "looking scary" seems to be one of those patently stupid things that people throw up as a form of Chewbacca Defense.

Guns are scary because we know they could go off and kill us. Some guns happen to look scarier than others but that has nothing to do with it. In fact I'd prefer if they're scary because that means people might be less likely to go near them.

Don't you get it? The Hello Kitty gun is using a corporate icon from Japan! If we don't ban Hello Kitty assault rifles, then Japan will be able to come in and institute martial law against our citizens! Do you want a repeat of Pearl Harbor? Because I know I don't!

Guns are like any other form of power: dangerous in the wrong hangs, and deadly when used by the irresponsible.

Exactly. The features aren't the problem, it's the people, and how can you help people? Better mental healthcare?

Why not an excise tax of .50 on every box of ammo and a $2.00 excise tax on every firearm sold to be specifically tagged for mental health reform and support? (These taxes would have to be protected from our thieving politicians however. They should be earmarked much the same way hunting license fees go to wildlife management programs.)

Simply banning things is the easy way out and does very little. The trick is to turn things to your advantage. We have constant problems with money, and money is really the only thing that keeps the squeaky wheels of progress going. A simple ban just adds more debt and a bigger budget.
