Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Serocco, please, for the love of God, STOP REPEATING YOURSELF. You've said the exact same thing for your last ten posts. We get it. You think Medicare and Social Security are going to get hacked to bits. Please think up something substantial to say instead of repeating yourself ad nausuem. Every time you do that, I take you a little less seriously.
In regards to the VAWA: I CANNOT believe they're still getting away with that stupid shit. What, exactly, do we have to do to get them to actually renew the damned thing? It was as habitual as the NDAA because it was something they did every year, but they pick this year to block it and get reamed because of their repeated treatment of women. And still they're blocking it, like they think they've got some kind of leverage in this issue. What, exactly, does this gain them?
Additional support from the Angry White Male contingent who can't stand the Gubmint telling them that they can't beat their wives?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Not renewing the VAWA? Now that's the worst direction to go,what's needed is a Spear Counterpart, why they haven't thought of a Spear Counterpart is a mind-boggle,seems a few years ago that would've been popular even.
At this point women and folks in general are likely to find that moronic and insulting. What with the fact that violence against women happens more because women are seen as weaker. The reason we even have a law specifically against women is because assualts of all sorts against women were going unreported, un-investigated, and unprosecuted. Which in the end required a special law to ensure that they were.
Because how dare Christie be concerned that Congress isn't handing over money that the people he represents need badly in order to resume their lives, right? God DAMN.
I think there are a lot of people who just don't understand why Sandy wasn't as big a blow to Obama's popularity as Katrina was to Bush's. I know that in the early days of the storm, people thought it was gonna doom Obama's campaign, under the logic that, when there's a major disaster, people will irrationally blame the the President. That this didn't come to pass is, in some people's minds, evidence of "the liberal media" spinning things to make Obama look good.
Wait, you guys don't know why the The House isn't renewing the VAWA this year?
Back in 2012, the Democrats in the Senate expanded the bill to cover gay men, lesbians, Native American women living in reservations, and trans women. It also gave battered illegal immigrants temporary visas. The Republican House objected to all of this, and instead passed the old version of the VAWA with all the new extensions omitted.
The Senate refused to pass the House's version of the VAWA, and the House refused to pass the Senate's version of the VAWA. At a standstill and with neither side willing to cave, no version of the VAWA was reauthorized.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Congress permitted a cut in the payroll tax to expire, meaning that the tax burden for the average worker will increase about $1,000
in 2013.
Tax cuts/increases are inherently neither good nor bad. It's all about the multipliers. In theory, if taking money away from poor and middle class workers allowed that money to be put to better use elsewhere, it would be worthwhile. In practice, payroll taxes are heavily regressive, so increasing them without broadening them is quite bad, especially since you're taking money from the people who are most likely to immediately spend it.
We need revenue to pay for social spending, but taking that revenue from people on the lower end of the income curve is counterproductive.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Don't strawman people. Serocco is on record as believing that the Obama administration is secretly trying to implement a moderate Republican agenda; that we basically have two conservative parties in power at the moment. While I understand why he feels that way, I think he's cherry picking his arguments to support his case.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I hope all of you remember Serroco's words when the next debt ceiling debtate comes around, which is in like 2 months.
The democratic party IS convervative. So much so that other countries conservative parties have close ties with them.
After all Obama called himself a "blue dog democrat".
The problem with this country is that we can only have moderate conservatives, and far right conservatives. What makes it worse is that the democrats actually pretend, and win on, showcasing them selves as liberals.
Also, Obama didnt participate in United Nations convention against racism, becuase, IRAN! Thats a "leftist" alright.

I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining.@Baff: Oh, we're all worried that Obama and the Democrats in Congress will give away something vital in the debt ceiling negotiations. What bugs me about the way you and Serocco are talking is that you seem to think that there is some reasonable alternative that doesn't involve "kinda rotten" versus "diabolically evil". Obama does have fairly liberal positions on several issues, and I would like to think that in a less right-shifted environment, he'd be willing to espouse more.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

@Serocco: exactly what you wanted to happen, right?
