Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I should point out the reason the House choose not to vote on the Sandy Relief Bill is bigger than 'I want to go home now'. The Senate wants the House to approve its $60 billion Sandy Relief Bill. The House wants the Senate to approve its $27 billion Sandy Relief Bill. Only one of these can be approved.
The Senate has accused the House of being miserly (true), while the House has accused the Senate of using the Relief Bill to fund things unrelated to Sandy (also true).
Both groups realize its an incredibly poor political move to vote against Disaster Relief, so the strategy is simply to not bring it up.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.I can bear Donald Trump's disappointment with great fortitude.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Serocco the tax cuts that are now permanent are mostly the ones we want to stay permanent. While I'd like those on people making 250k to expire I'm willing to accept 450k. It's better than what we could have gotten.
So I had a debate with someone today and they said we should have gone over the fiscal cliff because it would have ended the deficit. He then ranted about how the government system of taking from the rich and giving to the poor only for the poor to return the money to the rich is horribly inefficient. I tried to explain how it would stimulate the economy but he didn't agree no matter what I said.
Obama did not run on extending tax cuts on a permanent basis. He ran on allowing them to expire for those making over 250,000.
Under the deal, we get improved child tax credit, no cuts to food stamps and income tax credit extended to five years.
Tax cuts? Permanent. Unemployment benefits? Extended only for one year.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl. So? Tax cuts being permanent is far more important to me. Were you expecting the unemployment benefits to be extended more than a year? That just seems unreasonable given the way the GOP is acting.
It's a shitty compromise but it's better than what we could have gotten stuck with.

It is really feeling like the republican part is close to splitting open.

Also conservatives are claiming that stalling the Sandy Bill is a victory.
