Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

But they're always still representative of a fringe/crazy state.
Fringe/crazy representatives are elected by a tiny minority given too much power by gerrymandering. It's not democratic, whereas the Senate is always ultimately the responsibility of the people who elected them.
Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.Yes, but the tdoes not provide people with equal representation. It gives the people in smaller states greater representation than people in larger states, while the House gives each district of about the same number of people equal representation. If the problem is gerrymandering, then let's fix that problem, but the senate isn't how it's fixed.
Hang on, did the compromise fiscal cliff aversion bill just pass? Or are we still waiting on something? That would mean Republicans are explicitly voting for tax increases, let me remind everyone.

I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining.@Fighteer
I'm not quite sure, but I think it just passed.
Now the President has to sign it.
EDIT: They've spent at least 10 minutes bitching at Boehner.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Oh wait it passed? Guess I missed it.
Edit: So the vote on the senate amendment was THE vote on the bill? I see...

I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining. No, Tomu. The "figure of speech" was when I used "I don't believe" instead of "I don't think."
You then jumped on that, which was both gratuitous and rude. I don't know why you thought that was important, probably because I wasn't taking your point as seriously as you liked and you wanted something to attack about my post.
Everything since has been a response to your out-of-nowhere attack against a figure of speech on my part. Except now I've been mean about Keynesian economics, so this spiraled out of control.
Edit: Glad to hear it. Never mind, then.

Several Representatives from all political spectrums just spent collectively 28 minutes asking The House and Speaker Boehner not to adjourn before discussing The Hurricane Sandy Relief Bill.
And the House still adjourned.
Weren't you watching?

Nine moments that were significant in the past year.
And a slightly old article, but relevant to our politics:

Including a few Republicans which makes me have some hope for the (once) G.O.P.
