Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'd point out that a savvy politician (which both Obama and Biden are) never ever goes into a negotiation without wiggle room. If they were saying $250,000, they were willing to go higher. If $250,000 really was their sticking point, they would have gone for an even lower public figure to start with.
My understanding from the UK is that this is the first time in nearly twenty years Federal taxes have been raised. Is that right? Because if that's right, then just re-establishing the principle that 'taxes can rise' is a huge victory.
It ain't over 'till the ring hits the lava.IMHO, With the way things are, voting them out won't be enough, due to BS gerrymandering and consistent vote suppression - IMHO, it's time the people took a look around, saw what a failure/hellhole our country is, educated themselves, and fought back accordingly. We don't need an Arab Spring, but we might as well have one at this point with where we're going...
I'm sick of this complaining. Where is the drive? Where is the action? Where is the true outrage that I proudly salute that accompanies the Arab Spring? I'd like answers, but people think I'm talking crazy/insane at this point...
Focusing on the real subject at hand, I'd be more grateful if the Repugs had caved period, if only to reveal them as the bough-and-sold scum they are for ruining mine and our country in general.

This is where I, the Vampire Mistress, proudly reside: http://liberal.nationstates.net/nation=nova_nacioBaff I hope you are aware that being as uncompromising as the republicans isn't going to fix anything and just continue this bullshit, right?
Probably because despite all the bullshit, life isn't "sucking" for the majority of us. We have movies, video games, internet, tv, food, etc.

They did not come up with the 250 000 figure. Bush did.
If they where such expert negociators they would have ask to raise the taxes EVEN MORE, on people winning over 250000 dollars a year.
But deep down, the democrats didnt want to raise taxes on the rich, becuase, guess what? They are rich.
In other words. Democrats are paid loser. Their sole function in Washington is to capitulate to Republicans.

I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining.
Its stands to reason. That is all they ever do. They only pretend to fight. They had victory serve on a platter for them, and they "compromised"
Jeez. Good job guys. Thats like calling it tables in a game of chess when you have checkmate in 4 moves.
Also, we already ran out of the cliff, go figure.

I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining. This isn't about scoring political victories god dammit.
This is about trying to compromise to get our country out of this economic bullshit.
This isn't "chess" or something.
Considering how steadfast and rabid republicans were about ANY tax increase, I'd say 450k is some good compromise (certainly better than 1 million)
Although it sounds like Republicans are going to vote it against it anyway so weeeeee!

If it isnt about scoring political victories, then what is it about?
Politics run the country, you vote for people to push for policies you like. When you elect a mayority, with a mayority, who spouses certain politics, and then they go and have every tool to implement those politics trough policies, and they failed to do so, and it just happens to be a coincidence that implemneting said policies would be detrimental to them themselves because they are all rich..
Well then you can give them a pass the first time. But this is the 3rd time, and now they had, more than ever, a chance to win.
And they compromised.
Maybe if you stopped repeating ad verbatum propagandistic slongs you would see.

I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining. No, its nonsensical.
The whole "lets forget our politics for the good of ther country" is a form of control trough propaganda. You know what is says? Abdicate your ideas for the good of stablished society.
And its funny how it applies to Dems and not Reps...
Yeah, unilateral disarmament, that will save the country!

I will always cherish the chance of a new beggining. If our country was about "our way or the highway" we wouldn't have the ability to have a partisan congress, we'd be a dictatorship.
Also lately whenever we go "our way or the highway" we end up on the highway.
Maaaaaybe Democrats realize that politics isn't "warfare"
People are sick and tired of this partisan bickering, and any compromise is a step in the right direction.
This mindset of yours is why we're in such a shitty congress right now.
edited 1st Jan '13 11:36:49 AM by Thorn14
You are too indoctrinated to see that partisan bickering is more like Republican control and democratic whinning and eventual capitulation.
Everything about this is republican. It was the damn republicans who intended for the tax to expire any freaking way.

I am by a far a compromising person. Ive admitted to so many errors in this thing, I am sure you have noticed.
I just happen to handle a different line of argumentation than most.
I would argue Americans are heavily indoctrinated (in fact eveyrone is). Difference is that Americans dont realize to what extend the have been indocrtinated where as people around the world do know they have been indoctrinated to certain extend.
But in the end this is what happens when you dont repeat the stablished narrative...

Exactly... It's clear that only people power, as exhibited from groups like OWS will save this country from fascism and totalitarian business practices/corporatism. We need to be out there and I don't need to say why beyond that!
At this point, all these cries that gov't has failed us are a wake up call that maybe we just need to dismantle gov't, just like Italy did with theirs a week or so back, at this point...
