There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Brace yourselves for the panic and outrage from the rich over the botched deal and cliff falling. I sure as hell will enjoy their reactions.

Hillary Clinton suffered a concussion earlier, right? She has a blood clot.

HOLD UP EVERYBODY

Apparently last-minute negotiations between the White House and the Senate Republican leadership actually secured a tentative agreement in the last minute. Under the agreement, tax rates would jump to 39.6 percent from 35 percent for individual incomes over $400,000 and couples over $450,000, while tax deductions and credits would start phasing out on incomes as low as $200,000.

But since the House basically just Raged Quit , there's no time to get it through Congress. So were going over the Fiscal Cliff.

However I believe they can still make a deal after the Fiscal Cliff, since most of the cuts don't happen immediately. Correct?

[up]Yes they can.

I don't like the idea about rates not climbing for those making 250k though. The deductions being gone would be okay I guess but I'd like both.

I posted that a few pages back. The problem is, it's not a deal. The republicans aren't going to accept it, because it doesn't include cuts. They've said so. So until they've "negotiated" that bit, it's only going to be accepted by the senate.

[up] In other words, that senate deal won't reach the House floor, so it doesn't matter.

But the Democrats have noted there willing to allow cuts to certain entitlement programs, so (with some tweaking) a post-Fiscal Cliff Deal may yet be reached.

The Senate deal extends the tax cuts for the rich. The spending cuts to defense and the social programs will be delayed for two months.

Note that this is only the deal from the Senate. The House already adjourned and won't reconvene until tomorrow, by which we would have most likely been over the cliff.

Despite campaigning for removing the tax cuts, Obama struck a deal that extends the tax cuts once again.

The founder of Domino's Pizza won a court order that temporarily allows him to avoid Affordable Care Act-mandated contraceptive coverage for employees at his Ann Arbor, Michigan, Domino's Farms property management company.

Since that property management company only employees 99 people (and 44 of them only work part-time), I question whether this was worth bringing to court. But this guy seems more interested moral victory than a fiscal victory.

So, it's as I said, the Senate made a deal that won't go into effect because the House won't be there until after the deadline has been reached.

Seems like every business is suing over this Obamacare thing. Jesus. Is there not one that's just letting it be? And treating their employees well?

Yeah, see, I don't resort to mindless sarcasm nearly as much as the rest of you. I actually find the constant sarcasm obnoxious and think that it tends to stifle debate. So yes, when I ask a question, it's a sincere question.

Well it's prisoner's dilemma, right, as usual. If one place starts being nice they lose, but if everyone is nice they win. So nobody wants to risk it.

We've already done that, and we've discussed several times that it's more like a bumpy slope, since all those things they'd vote on don't expire all at once. I certainly anticipate a lot more gridlock. It is, however, becoming more and more clear who's at fault for it. I just hope this puts pressure on the Republicans to start behaving a little more sanely, if only to keep their jobs come election time.

I still don't like how Biden and Obama will continue the tax cuts.

Whether it's for the rich or the workers, tax cuts never work, but it's something Congress forgets about.

How do tax cuts for workers (by which I assume you mean middle class) not work? It means they have more money to spend on various things. Hell, encouraging spending is why there's tax exemptions for the poor; so they'll go out and buy things at grocery stores and malls and shit instead of it all going to taxes and they just have no money to spend.

Tax cuts in themselves aren't really bad things. It's about how much and where they're occurring that determines how good a particular tax cut policy is.

Serocco the workers need the tax cuts. I used the calculator posted earlier and my parents will have to pay 6k more a year if these cuts stay. We simply can't afford that. We can barely get by now and I have to go to college next year which is going to set us back a ton.

Grover Norquist supports Senate cliff plan

Apparently Norquist doesn't see the raising of taxes on those earning $450,000 or more annually, or the estate tax being raised on estates valued at $5 million or more as violation of his anti-tax pledge.

Huh. Not sure if I can understand that logic.

Look we'll have to deal with the stuff again but taxes are the main thing right now. Some social programs could probably use a little trimming but taxes going up directly affects everybody in this nation.

@Norquist: Wuhh...

Well, it's been pretty damned obvious that the fiscal cliff talk wasn't simply going to end when the year changed, Serrocco. Of course the talk is going to continue. And you're not going to be pleased with any deal that cedes any ground at all, in spite of how fucking ridiculously unrealistic your position on negotiation is.
