The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Good.

Better over the cliff than allowing republicans to conveniently weasel out of budget cuts to sacred repulican cows.

Amen brother.

Tentative new tax deal worked out.

I'm tentatively liking this, this far. The Capital Gains rate needs to be much higher, as well as the increase from 35% to 39%, but it's better than what I thought we might be getting. Now, if we can just avoid cuts, we're good.

lol like GOP'ers ever having a soul. And if they did I bet it probably died in a fire like a hundred years ago after Lincoln's era.

We're not really in the last hours of the fiscal cliff yet. While the tax changes officially happen at midnight, since tomorrow's a Federal holiday, not much will actually happen until the day after.

I read about the deal in Krugman's blog. Somebody explain to me how Boehner will get his coalition to vote for it.

Well, they don't need the majority of the majority, do they? Just enough Republican votes that, with the Democratic votes (that shouldn't see many defectors, due to an absence of social security cuts), is a simple majority.

I don't think so. If it comes to a vote the democrats can do it if they get enough support from the republicans who are sane. The senate is pretty much a non-issue.

True enough; if they get most of the Democrats to vote for it, then all Boehner needs to do is convince enough of his caucus to vote as well, and we've managed to put off the crisis for a short while. Then we have to get it through the Senate and McConnell's merry bunch of filibuster-happy Tea Partiers.

How many Republicans do they need to not filibuster in order to pass something in the senate?

Depends upon the numbers of Democrats needed.

You need a supermajority to break a filibuster.

60 votes, to wit.

What do guys think will happen to the Stock Market tomorrow if we go off the Cliff?

[up] 50. There 50 Dems, 2 independent, and 48 Republicans. There is no telling how Lieberman and Manchin are going to vote.

Tomu: The Dems have 55 if you count the two independents. They typically side with the Dems.

Damn my dad is one depressing mofo. Said the repubs are likely to lower the taxes again come the third of Jan after we go over the cliff.

We do want to lower taxes on middle class families. I don't think that if we go over the cliff they'll be able to get the tax cuts on the top income brackets though.
